Another point is that this thread is quite consistant with the many threads and posts about architecture in its many forms, especially within Riverside. uncle, I am not sure how long you have been watching this space, but it was created as a result of an attempt to re-vision the downtown Riverside. This subject of course is about design and archtitecture flows naturally from this.

here is one such thread, for example. Note the keyword 'architecture' in that thread which will link to more threads.

http://www.riversideinfo.org/forum/topic/architecture-for-riverside#post-4350

THe house in this thread is a good example of a well designed house in Riverside, an object of beauty , fitting into the space nicely and organically, with lots of light in it. I am surprised that something in the mid 20th century can be so interesting. by mid 20th centiry, is it post ww2?

It reminds me a bit, at least in spirit, of another house in riverside that sits so well in its space, frank lloyd wright's tomek house - but without the overhead of a landmark house. "The beauty and design of a landmark , but without the price". book it, ms faust.

On Fairness and Equality, Part I

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, …”
Let’s start there.

The founders agreed that our creator actually “made” us equal. Thus, at birth, with nothing but a devine background, we are born into this world as equals. Sure, we have different gene pools that will affect our development, but for practical purposes, we all line up on the same starting line of life.

The cradle of democracy within Modern History, a designation the US correctly prides itself of, thus describes equality as an essential condition of human life at birth.

Let’s assume we track the same group of people introduced above. And let’s further assume that 18 years later, at the beginning of their adult life, all members of that group are still lined up as they cross the line that marks the beginning of adulthood, and all of them are educated to the same high level as compared to the areas of the world where democracy is suppressed and education barred. I will call this condition the “fair shot at life” scenario.

Fairness, as pointed out by JamesMarsh, as defined in the dictionary: free from bias, dishonesty, or injustice.

Under the fair shot at life scenario, I might consider subscribing to a more conservative philosophy. Lack of success could be more directly attributed to lack of effort, to a conscious decision not to pursue success and excellence. It would then make sense for the system to be tilted to favor the ones that distinguish themselves by working hard, and by going above and beyond.

However, we all know that the fair shot at life scenario is not what 18 year olds start with.

I consider the greatest unfairness, or injustice, by far, in the United States, to be the fact that we, as a people, are unable or unwilling to provide equal opportunity of education to all children. Our failure to get people to be much closer on the starting line of the adult life is our greatest weakness. This seems particularly obvious to me since people ages 1-18 don’t enjoy freedom in the sense that they cannot participate in the democratic process. For better or worse, they have to live with what system is in place, with no way of changing it. By the time they are old enough to participate in setting the rules, many are already too far behind.

I believe the root cause of social and economic disparity to be different levels of education. Of course, there are a myriad of other causes, but the most important cause is unequal education.

mr, JamesMarsh, chrisrobling, what do you consider to be the root cause for the current social and economic disparity, even in case you don’t think that disparity is a problem?

Chris:

Spatny is a friend of mine also. I respect him greatly for speaking out, for taking his citizenship obligation very seriously, for posting under his actual name. Like his opinions or not, I prefer his kind over anyone who does not pay attention about community issues or simply remains silent for fear of exposure.

I think we agree that spatny cares.

With regard to this thread, I don't think spatny helps his cause, or the broader discussion at hand, if the goal of the discussion is to find areas of agreement. He has made it abundantly clear where he stands, and his repeated copying of other people's writings and general trashing of anyting GOP is certainly not increasing chances of constructive dialogue. If I were a hard core conservative, I'm sure he'd get on my nerves. But since I'm not, I look at it as a relief valve for his frustrations with the politics of the present.

In that I agree with him completely, as appears do almost 90% of the US public. Namely, that the system is broken, and that we appear unable to talk and listen to each other.

Speaking of fairness, this is a pretty interesting set of comments about the NJ Teachers union officials' "life is not fair" comment. Pretty impressive response by Chris Christie.

mrt:

I am not justifying his access, but keep in mind that Steve Jobs is one impressive guy. His companies employ a lot of people, pay a lot of taxes, make decisions on expansion. He influences opinions. It is not all about campaign contributions. This man simply has more impact in a variety of arenas. He is instant credibility because of his proven accomplishments.

speaking of inappropriate instrusiveness - I recall something I read with Steve Jobs - persoanlly castigated Obama and said if he does nt change *something* he'll be a one term president.

How the heck did that one guy get such unimpeded access to the president of the united states?

I sent about 20 emails to obama re the outsourcing issue and I finally got one reply (probably from a college intern about 10 levels or more removed from obama), which said

"We have to give what the companies need."

This little contrast speaks volumes on how America is run today - and who is running things. It is not of, by, and for 'the people'.

mr (+JamesMarsh):

Agreed. You both did not tie the discussion to National politics.
Chris, the partisan pundit, did.

I do plan to respond to the question of fairness and/or equality.
