I'm not an architect or contractor, but a review of the plans and cost summaries doesn't seem to present any "fluff." Anyone who has kids in these schools, or who has spent any time there, knows that they all need upgrading and maintainence. The focus of these plans seems to be on electrical, plumbing and painting--all of which are needed.

As far as taking a loan out to cover some of the costs, this seems eminently reasonable and responsible. Interest rates are as low as they've ever been, so if the school district is in a position to take advantage of them, I think it makes sense.

Well, of course, the life safety infrastructure of the schools must be corrected. I question why it hasn't been done before. We seem to have a surplus of funds. We were certainly taxed to the max. It seems to me that this is a lot of money at this time. I wonder if there is any fluff written in it. Actually, I wonder HOW MUCH fluff is in it.

Correct me if I am wrong but life safety issues deal with infrastructures of the five schools in distric 96. Electric plumbing alarm systems etc. If the buildings need upgrading ( possibly to code or statute ?) then by all means they need to do it and if bonds need to be issued doing so at the lowest possible inerest rate payable makes sense.

What are your thoughts on the plans for District 96 to spend $24,000,000.00 on "life safety" issues, including borrowing $10,000,000.00 to do it?

Here's the story from the Landmark, including the improvement plans and cost summary for each school.

The graphic that accompanied the story in the print edition is not shown on the on line edition. D96 was in the list of the top 25 in Cook County. Here is a link to a listing. D96 is on page 2. The print edition might have tracked only the cash balance itself as a 5 of operating expenses.

I don't know how many people may have seen this article in yesterday's Tribune. Riverside D96 shown as one of those districts.

Schools stockpile large amounts of money in fund balances

"If you think we pay more for a supe at D96 than the Chicago school system does it really shows how whacko this Board is. Hubermann has to deal with hundreds of schools and a $6 Billion dollar budget and is paid less than we pay to deal with five elementary and a middle school? Every single one of them ought to get dumped."

Mr. Spatny - your vote for Mr. O'Brien will go to the author of the only letter I ever saw commending the board for Dr. Lamberson's salary....based on your remarks from only one year ago against the board who voted for the salary, I have to say I am surprised at your about-face.

Of course he has the right to run. And his wife has the right to work wherever she can get a job. But to have a husband and wife team on the school board and in the administration, well, it doesn't seem ethical. How can the spouse of a employee recluse himself on every issue? Every issue will affect the schools, and by extension, the employees. Just my thought, we should elect other candidates than this Michael O'Brien.

Of course he has the right to run, and with two young children and a wife engaged in education in the front lines, would be the perfect kind of person to have on the Board. He's intelligent and articulate and vested in the district. Any potential conflict issues he can recuse himself from. I can't imagine a better candidate. Besides, his dog McDuff will swing the canine vote if the treats are there.
