Thank heavens for capitalism! I encourage everyone to go out and support the Riverside Junior Theater Guild!

I also heartily recommend the Hauser production of Charlie's Aunt! It's very good. The talent in our community is phenomenal. The countless volunteer hours the parents put in is remarkable. This production is free to attend, although I wonder how much we really pay for it.

In any case, it is well worth the almost 3 hour show. One show left to do on Wednesday night.

To the cast and crew of both plays--Break a Leg!

Despite the powers that be cutting the high school musical after the referendum failed last spring, the Riverside Jr Theater Guild led by D Glaser and J Sheehan stepped up and volunteered their time - and own money since they had to rent the space that we the taxpayers built - to put on Lil Abner.

So come out and support grassroots bootstrap musical theater at RB.

“Lil’ Abner” will be presented by the Riverside Junior Theater Guild at 8 p.m. Nov. 16-18 in the auditorium at Riverside Brookfield High School, 160 Ridgewood Road, Riverside.

Hi,

I just wanted to let this forum know that www.rbclarion.com is now open - the web home of the Clarion, RB's student newspaper.

We do try to have our stories reflect the interest of our community. I'd direct your attention to our current story about administrator raises. We follow your dialogue here and had seen questions raised regarding the decision-making process about administrator raises and tried to address them in our story. You might find it of interest.

We have a wealth of referendum-related stories that look at the scope and impact of the failed referendum as well as the bright-spots, coping strategies, and future outlook of the school's finances. More are coming as well.

Please don't hesitate to comment on our stories, submit media or story ideas through our U Report page, or e-mail me (mancoffd@rbhs208.org) or any reporter if you have specific story ideas or questions. We're an independent paper, so we can't guarantee coverage, but we will listen to all ideas.

Additionally, we are available to friend on Facebook (rbhs clarion) or follow on Twitter (@rbhsclarion) if you want.

Anyway, happy reading,

THe following is my quick review, shared with you a day late and a dollar short - but better late than never, of the recent musical that RB put on, The Wiz. As you can see, it was very good. I could not even last through the movie hollywood made, but this production was charming, well executed, lively, and fun to watch.

Note: Ms Briskman was another of the referendum cuts besides Mr Porter. I THINK I heard noises that musicals at RB would be cut out or put on every other year if the referendum did not pass. I am trying to nail this nonsense down. This is a part of RB's mission statement of providing a comprehensive education.

Two thumbs up, way UP for 'The Wiz'
Friday, March 25, 2011

Ms Marelli, Mr Baum, Ms Briskman and Mr. Rusnak, and all who put on the production of The Wiz (please send to any interested people whose emails I do not have),

...'scuse the long email, but I liked the play...'so sue me', as Nathan Detroit might say... :) ...

Grrrreat work! I thoroughly enjoyed this show (and my sister in law, niece, and aunt loved it, too), and I had never saw it before - the only song I ever heard was the 'Ease on down' song.

It turns out that song was one of many good solid and memorable songs in the musical, and certainly not the best. Gawd, in Aunt Em's song, Brittany C's phrasing and expression seemed flawless; Andie K's well done and affecting 'Home' song-pair; 'He's the Wiz' (kinda cleverly alitterative); Kyle P's Scarecrow's intro (love the baseline), the 'Mean Ol Lion' (love the rolling drums and horns' crescendo as well as Andrew Peyton's delivery), the 'Be a Lion' (see below), Andrew B's heartfelt ballad, 'What Would I do' , Taylor D's Bad News (lyrics are deceptively simple; this bad girl's desire for good news ain't that bad at all, come to think about it; on the other hand, *YES* men?), Everybody Rejoice (it's a brand new day)-this is anthem-like; why havent I heard of this like 'what I did for love' or 'climb every mountain'?, Jacob P's 'So you want to meet the wi-ZARD!', Masha Y's Glinda singing 'A rested body is a rested mind' seemed almost transcendent, and more...

What was cool about this collection of songs was that there was a nice mix of fast and slow, sweet and tart with an inspiring exclamation point at the end in the Everybody Rejoice number.

I even checked out other versions of these songs on utube and darn if the RB version was not better than those other ones. There was better tempo, better dynamics, acting/expression in the the RB version than what I saw on utube.

All parts of the show came together nicely. To wit:

The acting/singing, with attention to detail such as

*Andie K's Dorothy with her highly credible orphaned worried look, for example, and the wonderful notes she hit; Andrew P's Lion with his lovable bluster and neurotic weakness (and operatic range!), Taylor D's wicked witch's singing and acting which was a veritable tour de force, a scenery chewing role like Jack Nicholson in Batman, eg ;

*JAcob P's wizard's production numbers were just plain fun to watch: such as the revival preacher; and, with those sequin pumps, garish green cape, and high graying hair (and polish surname), all Jacob needed was a candelabra - shoot, considering his age, did he even know he was channeling that great entertainer, Liberace -AND Michael Jackson?

*the ever present and always interesting Chorister Pitt singers' playful singing, expressions and over the top costumes - which reflected the tenor and tone of each scene like some sort of broadcast antennae for the audience (sort of a PIP , a picture-in-the-picture, and secondary action running in parallel with the main action), which gave the audience more to munch on and keep interested - complemented quite nicely with the solo singers' songs; they also provided some rough narration , 'Meanwhile at the wicked witches castle', which provided fun camp for us.

What was also neat was that my daughter , Kristin, one of those choristers, said they made up those motions and expressions showing that one can create even with little space to do this. That is probably a reflection of ms marelli's vocal instruction from the recitals that I have seen.

dancing, sometimes complex coming down the stairs and into the audience's midst so that we felt that we could reach out and grab the action; I really liked the Tornado scene - who needs Avatar in 3D when you have giant cloudscarfs in front of your eyes? :) ;

sound, lights; presumed tech people behind the stage --like the offensive line in football, you don't notice them, just their effects; but they are an *essential* piece in the whole;

and finally, THE ORCHESTRA/music, which sounded very full, tight, balanced, practiced, and crisp - LOVED the solid consistant bass introducing and leading all the music - that would be kudos to Dennis P and Molly C; LOVED the jazzy horns coming on top of the main movements like a flourish and sometimes leading the charge; I am sure the talent of the imea level people such as Dovas L and Ben M and others - I also saw sr Drew K - contributed to the horns; the lively pianos - I think I counted three;

I could even distinguish the strings all the way up on the balcony in the ballads - they provided a nice complement to the jazziness; the guitar work, including at least one nice solo during, I think, the poppy scene (that was very *cool* music, and there was an obvious dna connection to the Wiz's gritty urban setting...which was.. uh, what it was , I guess, a connection to a gritty urban setting); again, I liked the tornado scene. THe musicians contributed greatly to the 'atmosphere' :).

the musicians, in short, did not seem to 'mail it in', but played with feeling.

...and even more than I can relate now (see below for more)...

...all these pieces came together in a tight fitting pleasing organic whole. These elements, in short, got into us, the audience.

All put together, and considering the subject matter and theme of imagination, the word that came to my mind to describe this was, perhaps, a new species of theater, a 'Magical' - which is more than a mere musical.

One interesting thing is that this was achieved with simpler sets - the people playing their roles, admittedly in great costumes, and playing their instruments, and the lighting and sound, did the big work to bring on the magic.

One image that stayed with me and struck me, as I told Mr Rusnak after the Sunday performance, was at the end of the show when Dorothy was on the stage with her three friends evenly spaced behind her, each lit separately with the rest of the stage all dark - I got the distinct sense that these friends , the lion, tinman, and scarecrow, were from Dorothy's imagination. As their lights and being faded into blackness and Dorothy's light brightened, I felt a tinge of sadness for losing them.

As I felt when I watched the 1939 WOZ the first time as a little kid curled up on a blanket in our living room, I guess I believed that the munchkins, the wicked witch, the wizard and all the rest were somehow *real*; and, yes, I second the scarecrow's newfound idea that Dorothy from the dull plains, or Dorothy from a desiccated cityscape, --or even us in the audience in Riverside-- CAN return to such a colorful, exciting and wild landscape whenever we want to.

Following are some quick notes and impressions on some of the pieces of the play. ...

The Wiz - Prologue: Kansas [HQ]
at 1:38 , you can hear some nice strings. The whole orchestra, horns, bass, piano, and the always interesting and pleasant sounding Pitt Singers, were tight. Great introduction to the Play.

Aunt Em - "Feeling we once had"

at 2:37 , that is a great 'see', and at 3:38, a great 'show'. The whole song seems perfect. I never heard of it, but , along with the precise phrasing , there is a great theme here of the relationship between mother (aunt)-daughter/teen that is just right for a high school musical.

"Soon as I Get Home" Thur, Mar 17, 2011 [HQ]
, done on THurs, Mar 17, during the day for the middle schoolers. Not only does she nail this song with soaring notes, she expresses the feelings of Dorothy wanting to go home - like an orphan, alone on the stage. Better than Judy and Diana - and right here in our lil' ol' RB HS - Bravo! You see the Yellow Brick Road people here , too, beckoning her to come on.

"He's a Wiz" - Sun, Mar 20,2011 [HD]
. We see the very colorful munchkins, Addaperle, and the Pitt Singers.
Da-da-dada-dahhh!

I like how Addaperle sings her song and the Munchkins and the Pitt Singers complement her song with their refrains.

"Be A Lion" - THu, Mar 17, 2011. [HQ]
I love the dynamics and composition of this piece which starts with a nice solo from Dorothy, then the lion comes in, and then we see a duet with both of these characters. I also see that the music / melody is a slow waltz, which is just right for what this song wants to say - it is a 'dance', a give and take, between these two characters.

After the mates' name calling banter, Dorothy shows her tender understanding side to the lion and so the song starts softer. Dorothy stands up and her voice gets stronger. The lion responds, then a soaring operatic duet unfolds between the lion and Dorothy, who is now acting as his de-facto on-the-road 'owl' (The Wiz' version of a psychotherapist :) ).

INSPIRING for us all. We all are, after all, Lions, but sometimes forget this.

Nicely done and affecting musical theater. Hey, great job - and these people are RB high schoolers!

"A Rested Body Is a Rested Mind" (part) - Mar 20, 2011 [HD]
This is one of the (several) very affecting songs of this RB 'Magical' - as I'd like to call it. Sorry about the unstable image in the middle - no tripod. And sorry about the truncation of the song - the darn battery went out.

But beyond these flaws, one can still hear the nice composition of this piece: first, the soothing harmonies of our friendly choristers sitting on the side, acting as an introduction to Her entrance (speaking of which, I love how the men, all dressed in white, brought her slowly on stage to the beat of the music), then note how the horns are carefully folded into the song (at 0:36). Then Her Lady-ness comes in with a very nice voice that is *pure shade* / rest awhile; the singer is in complete control of the song and of the moment.

When she sang that she was watching all of Dorothy's travails- her 'trip' - wow, that really moved me. It reminded me a bit of "It's a Wonderful Life" and the points of view of the angels who look on our lives. As she was dressed in a resplendent blue, it reminded me a bit of a certain Lady whom I believe is watching over us, too.
