I encourage all who can to attend tonight's Board meeting at 7:30pm in order to demonstrate overwhelming village-wide support of the 2010 Riverside Bicycle Plan. Tonight, the Board will be voting on a resolution designating the "Riverside Heritage Route" and "Riverside Ring Route" as bike routes. (The attached PDF shows these routes, their connections to existing paths, trails and routes, and the intended locations for map kiosks.)

http://s93980653.onlinehome.us/Riverside-Bike-Map-February-2010.pdf

The benefits and opportunities have been laid out at various meetings and are detailed on the following PDF on page two.

http://s93980653.onlinehome.us/bicycle-plan-flyer.pdf

Tom Jacobs has done a tremendous job spearheading, detailing and outlining benefits of the plan over the months, but he can't do it alone. Presence in numbers may have the power to affect a vote (or two.) A "YES" vote is not just important to bike riders in and out of the village, it is important to the vitality and economic health of our CBD (as well as our real estate values), and therefore important to every resident in our great Village. If you have been one critical of our CBD, do something positive about it by coming to express support of this plan.

If you have any last-minute questions, please direct them to info@greenriverside.org prior to the meeting tonight. If you can't come, please encourage other friends or family members to come and show support.

LOVE the bike route plan. Thanks to Tom and the entire Sustainability Council for such a thorough presentation. Tom, maybe you can ride your Swiss Army bike down the route to christen it!

Tom Jacobs and the Sustainability Council did an excellent presentation of the various bike routes, and specifically recommended the Board consider the 2010 Routes, which include the Riverside Heritage Route and the Riverside Ring Route, both of which could be implemented immediately and at low cost.

It has the support of the Chamber, EDC, Historical Commission, Parks and Rec, and some other groups I'm forgetting, as well as over 250 residents who signed the bike route petition. Several Trustees voiced strong support.

President Gorman has concerns about liability (which Peter Scalera should be able to allay shortly with some research) and questions about usage. He wants input from the County, even though possible extensions to routes outside of Riverside, or a tunnel, are NOT part of the 2010 bike route plan. He also wants input from residents, so if you're reading this, please email your opinion of this plan - pro or con - to him directly, so he knows how residents feel. I believe the majority of residents are in favor of the plan - we benefit, kids benefit, the CDB benefits, the air benefits, property values benefit. Heck - adoption of these two routes even makes the Village eligible for grants. Anyone against increased revenue??

Pres. Gorman's email is: mgorman@riverside.il.us

thanks, tom. Yes, that center of town cross walk at the tracks is tricky and unsafe for cars, bikes, and pedestrians. This idea would be a safe way to get across in addition to providing a seamless link in the bike way.

Any dreams or goals about getting a pedway bridge across first avenue? I think this would also be consistent with walking/biking model for health reasons as well as for getting people from the zoo over here easier, thus making riverside - zoo (that area west of 1st) more connected as in a campus idea.
