I heard an interesting piece on NPR today, Saturday, 4/28, in the early afternoon where it said that a hot trend today in real estate developments is an attempt at getting the small town look and feel. The segment said that this is what a lot of people are trying to, and want to, buy, nowadays.

Ironic that we in Riverside are there already (small) and trying to make ourselves bigger.

I could not find the link. If anyone can provide it, I'd appreciate it. I liked the peice so much I was going to buy a transcript. It supports the 'embrace our smalltownness' that has been espoused here in counter to the 'make us bigger' approach of the pro-tif.

Look at the work of Andres Duany and his wife - projects like Seaside, FL and lots more. Very good feel to the places he builds. Invites walking around - like Riverside does. The Trustees should get out of their cars and try it.

Beyond making a statement of 'it is ironic that they are trying to take away any small town atmosphere that Riverside has left',

    let's say it another way:

By removing the bit of small town atmosphere that Riverside has left, it will hasten the exit of more people; any new people will never know what they lost.

The president of riverside once told me that he was worried about people fleeing Riverside because of the degeneration of the downtown as well as the increased taxes.

There are about 2,000 posts on the 5,000 posts in this forum about one instransigent landlord in the center of town who is a major cause of the degeneration and reasonably doubting whether a TIF is the right way to correct this landlord problem.

Actually, in response to the president,
I have heard a few anecdotes personally from people who have left Riverside because of 'what they were doing downtown' (they meant the VC, TOD, and TIF.

Again, we should plan first. It will help when the inevitable development project comes up for review. The trustees would have a better idea of judging its merits, or its demerits, against a clear and distinct standard.

    Like this development project....
