A new nadir at District 96 in employee relations...

Last year Dist 96 switched to an automated sub teacher system that forces the subs to constantly monitor a web site to snatch up a job when it is listed. It was supposed to have a feature where the classroom teachers could select the sub they preferred, but the Superintendent never had that portion of the project installed. Now this service, called AESOP, is marketing a "Jobulator" - no kidding, that's the name - that each sub can subscribe to for "Only $39.95 a year" to get instant warnings sent to your computer - if you happen to be sitting at one - when a job is posted. If this keeps going pretty soon they can dispense with this whole system and just have a "shape up" out in front of the District Office every morning where the subs can show up and fight over the job tokens as the stevedores did in "On the Waterfront." The ghost of Johnny Friendly is alive and well and right here. If you think this is garbage let the Super and the Board know - I did.

    Dear Dr. Lamberson:

Back in August I wrote you about my wife’s concerns regarding the Aesop system and the failure to install the ability for individual teachers to preselect the substitute they wish to have for their class, but you failed to answer me. Yesterday my wife asked one of the tech people when that feature would be installed and he was evasive on the subject, so I’m asking you directly - “When will that feature, which Aesop touts as giving regular teachers more control, be activated?” It would be good for classroom continuity. Answer, please.

It happened that my wife was doing a half-day at Central yesterday and the teacher asked her if she was going to be there today, as well. My wife responded that she did not see that job and it must have been taken by someone else. So that class now gets two subs on consecutive days, perhaps a sub that doesn’t know the children or the routine. The way the system is working WITHOUT this feature installed, THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. How about getting the complete system up and running NOW. It’s a simple install and would benefit the schools immensely.

This morning I saw that AESOP has begun to offer a subscription -for-fee based “Jobulator” notification system. EUREKA, you’ve done it! You’ve created an electronic “shape-up” where the substitute teachers can now compete with one-another electronically by paying a fee to be sent alerts to their computers. You can even have it ring a bell or chirp every minute when a job is available. You should change your name to Dr. Pavlov if not “Johnny Friendly.” Pretty soon the subs will learn to sit up and roll over - they can already beg for work and now they will be able to respond to ringing bells - assuming, that is, they decide to pay for it so they can get a leg up on their fellow subs.

Now the subs will be like pole dancers at a strip club where they have to pay a “performance fee” to work. How can you degrade these hard working, dedicated people like this? I guess the answer is, “easy.” Does the District get a cut on this, or maybe up there on the mountain top you can’t see what it’s like down in the mines.

A-mazing. The "Jobulator" offer has disappeared from the AESOP web site, as if by magic. In less than five hours. I wonder how/why that happened. Now if they would only install the teacher preference component, as it was pitched and they said they were going to. Both regular classroom teachers and subs are all for it. How about it, Jon. Can we get that done as quickly?

Well, it may free you from searching, but it isn’t exactly free. And you still need to go to a computer to see it, or use it. But, if you want to work, you’re going to have to subscribe. And pay for the privelege. Lucky you.

    Renewing Your Subscription FAQ
    1. How much does Jobulator cost?
After the free trial, you'll have the option to subscribe to the Jobulator service for a $39.99 annual subscription fee (that's less than a weekly cup of coffee during the average school year!).

    2. Why does Jobulator ask for my Aesop PIN?
When you bring Jobulator to life for the very first time using your unique 16-digit Activation Key, Jobulator requires you to enter your Aesop PIN. This is a one-time process, not something you have to do every time you turn on your computer. Jobulator asks for your PIN in order to verify that the Activation Key you enter is actually yours. Without PIN verification, if you were to accidentally enter an incorrect Key that belonged to someone else, Jobulator would show you the other person's jobs, not yours. PIN verification ensures that you and every other Jobulator customer see the right available jobs.
We also request that you enter your PIN when you accept a job in Jobulator, in order to verify that it's really you clicking that mouse to accept a job (and not your 6-year-old or pet ferret). As with activating the program, we are simply trying to confirm your identity.

    3. Why does the "My Account" page tell me my information is invalid?
The website may not recognize either the email address or the PIN you are entering. Be sure that the email address you are using is the one you signed up with for Jobulator. If you continue to have trouble, please contact the Jobulator support team at support@jobulator.com.

    4. Why do I see multiple charges from Jobulator on my credit/debit card?
This may occur if your attempt to renew fails and you try again. Often those funds are temporarily held in limbo until the purchase request clears. Normally after a day or two your account should return to normal.  Please let the Jobulator support team know if you need any help in regards to your purchase. Feel free to email us at support@jobulator.com."

Isn't that professional! Now you are not just a teacher, you are a "customer." See, you are purchasing something, which you will need not to get ahead of the other teachers looking for jobs, but just to stay even with those that do subscribe.

So you see, what I said earlier is correct. You substitute teachers now have an electronic shapeup where you, the teachers, have to pay to play. All they did is move the ads - the pitch - to the top of each teacher's home page. So no one else is even aware this is being sold. Thanks a lot, District 96.

How long will it be before you sell an upgrade to the teacher's cell phone, so you can get to them while they are working in the classroom? And what about ringtones? Maybe for another $1.99 a month you can get your favorite song to alert you to the opportunity to go to work.
