    Accident Still Under Investigation?
    From: riversidenewsflash@riverside.govoffice2.com (riversidenewsflash@riverside.govoffice2.com)

Accident at Woodside and Park Place still under investigation.

Car vs. child accident near Hauser:

Witness's state that a van proceeding down Woodside at Park Place after the light turned green was struck in the side by a child on a bicycle and the van may have rolled over the child's ankle.

The child's was transported to the hospital with an ankle injury.

The entire block is posted with signs that read "Positively no parking, stopping or standing..." yet the entire day the curb lanes on both sides have parked cars, and when school is starting or getting out many times three lanes are blocked. If the law is not going to be enforced then take the signs down. Cars and vans are maneuvering around with drivers talking on phones and calling kids to come to the cars as traffic tries to get through - one of these days some kid is going to dart out and get killed or backed up over. This is a mess and needs to be cleaned up before a tragedy happens. And it has nothing to do with the crossing guards.

I went to a D96 board meeting and asked that they address this issue a year ago.
The board made a decision to throw it to the pta's to figure out.
It was an absolute cop out.

The principal of Central NEVER steps outside at pick up or drop off.. and I am not exaggerating, NEVER.

There is the largest area of paved surface in this entire village behind the schools and the concern is whether organizing drop off/pick up behind the school would somehow interfere with Hauser p.e. If that is the case, and a school is incapable of re-organizing a few classes, it is time for the schools to close down Woodside & Akenside to ALL traffic twice a day except for the kids that can't walk (like a disability "can't walk,") they should be allowed to be driven in. The rest of the able bodied kids need to use their two feet.

Perhaps if D96/village cannot afford crossing guards, and D96/village cannot manage drop off/pick up effectively, and the vast majority of children are too lazy to walk...How about Busses? Would we prefer that?

It's not normal traffic coming by that is the problem. It is the total disregard for the "No Parking, stopping, standing" that is supposedly the Village ordinance there. Closing the street is not the answer, stopping the loading and unloading on both sides and even in the street (second lane) that is the problem. I met with Dr. Lamberson and we walked the area off Akenside where the drop off could be routed in and out (with existing egress and ingress) of a small part of the playground (coned off for peak times) but that never went anywhere. Cars North of the school should not even have to come to Woodside, they could drop off at that side.

There's plenty of paving, they just need to enforce the law and the kids walk a little around the school. Buses are even worse, as they sit there and idle and crowd the street now.

I am not certain how big yellow school buses would be at manuvering through our curvey streets, or how that would be less expensive.

    stephaniem:

Exactly. Buses would not solve the problem, for the reasons you state, particularly cost. However, the myriad of school districts throughout the country that do operate and pay for school buses do so because they want to get the students to school safe. Thus, there is a precedent for school districts paying for public safety services.
School Districts CHOOSE if they want to be involved in the public safety of their kids. D96 board members unfortunately are more interested in gifts to their top admin.

Kim points out a great point with regard to safety: at Central school, if the admin actually did something, like phyiscally show up in front of the school when drop-off happens to help enforce safe drop-off procedures, that would be a big step forward over the current laissez-faire, this is somebody else's problem, attitude. Some leadership and proactivity would go a long way.

I read this online yesterday and wondered if it was accurate:

"a van ... was struck in the side by a child on a bicycle"

    Is that right?

I think this thread was started because of a very unfortunate accident. The issue with the Superintendent's salary has been beaten to death....let it go!

Why should we let it go? The issue of the superintendent's salary is a huge issue, as is the issue of the lack of leadership in many of our school buildings. Not only at Central School, but does the principal of Hauser EVER leave the building to participate in, let alone observe, what goes on at Hauser? There are two administrators there to whom we pay a great deal of money. Two main exits, one for each administrator to monitor.

While we're on the subject of the lack of leadership in at least one building, I've mentioned another, is the principal at Hauser ever there? When?
