    ALTERNATIVES FOR
    FUNDING EDUCATION

    MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2009

    Hauser Jr. High School Auditorium
    65 Woodside Road

    6:30 P.M. Branch Business Meeting
    7:00 P.M. Presentation (Public Invited)
    7:45 P.M. Questions & Answers
    8:00 P.M. Refreshments

    KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
    Mr. Ralph Martire,
Executive Director of the Center for
    Tax and Budget Accountability (CTBA)
In Illinois today, a significant portion of the expense of elementary and secondary
education is funded by local property taxes. State funding of education ranks near the
bottom nationally. Is there a better way to fund our public schools? Ralph Martire, an
expert on tax policy, will discuss what options exist for Illinois.
Mr. Martire graduated from Indiana University Phi Beta Kappa, with a B.A. in history
and received his JD from the University of Michigan. In addition to his role at CTBA,
he is a regular columnist on public policy and good government, a frequent lecturer on
fiscal policy, and is also a teacher at the undergraduate and graduate student levels,
including courses on fiscal policy, the politics of education, and public policy.
Please invite your friends and neighbors to attend. All are welcome!

Someone who attended sent me this PDF of the Powerpoint slides that were used. Unfortunately, she explained that the presentation was much more than just showing the slides. Here it is anyway.

Here are some videos, not from the Riverside presentation, but similar:

I discussed the presentation a little bit with the person who attended and am happy to answer whatever questions you might have about the presentation, as much as I am able anyway.

thanks, chris, for posting this. A quick note to anyone who might want to better see the slides: Right-clicking on the slide gave the 'marquee zoom' option. Clicking marquis zoom allowed me to read the fine letters at the bottom of charts, for example.

I noticed that slide 12, I think it was, was a slide of our old friend (in these pages), of pension fund contributions. It showed a clear upward growth.

a question: I wonder if he noted how other states fund education? If Illinois uses local property taxes to fund schools in a significant manner, I am curious how education is funded in other states.

another question: when per-student funding is calculated (there was a slide on this), are payments to the school administrators folded into this metric? I am trying to compare/resolve the other thread re lamberson's 20 pct pay hike and the presentation of this thread.

Also, a note on advertising this kind of thing in the future: I did not see this advertised anywhere - but I have been consumed by other things, so maybe I missed the advertising. I do look at this site alot. So anyone who knows of something that would be of Riverside - community interest, please post it here in advance.

thanks, ChrisHajer. I appreciate that you posted the powerpoint presentation. I'm sure I will have questions about it.

to mrt's question, I don't know. but I have friends in other states who are teachers and they would love to work in Illinois. the salaries in their states do not compare at all with those in illinois, even downstate. there should be a happy medium, to pay them what they are worth, but not to overpay them so that the taxpayers are burdened, as we are now.
