I should add, that the members of our Village Board, and in particular the RCA, should try to remember a most important aspect of the Olmsted Plan. The Olmsted plan for Riverside was designed to foster a sense of community for those who reside here.

Great point Tim.

Tim, your last sentence hits the nail on the head. To repair that perception, all the FLOS needs to do is take official positions that demonstrate that things can be done in a way that enhance the historic nature of the village.
If it is individuals with grudges who are invoking the name of Olmsted as a reason not to do something, then the Society should be addressing it. It seems that the FLOS as an organization should be correcting the mis impression that cultivars would imperil our NHL status. If they can't support the donation, they can at least correct Trustee Reynolds unfortunate statement. Don't they have an obligation to do so? Why is the organization silent?

We really should move this discussion to one of the other tree threads...but since it continues.
KimJ, standing on "this is a fact, at the moment, cultivars are on the Village of Riverside's "plants to avoid" list" is (to use your terms) lame.
Since you posted on the NPS & DED resitant Elms thread that included a discussion about the inconsistencies (and weakness) of the village landscaping documentation, it makes one think that you are only seeing the parts you want to see.
Oh and to your questions:
Would you recommend me going Anon?
YES, because it is not always clear when you mix your personal opinion and the position of FLOS. I understand that FLOS direction is in some ways influenced by your opinion, but this particular discourse is likely doing FLOS a disservice, by strengthening peoples general impression of FLOS as overly conservative and aloof.Would my argument get further if I was "bob?" NO. The main difference is that when someone meets you in person, for the first time, there would be no baggage clouding their impression of you. Like it or not, written word is very different from spoken word and (IMO) 1st impressions are best left to "in person" introductions.
Now can we go back to the Coolest Towns topic? I'm sure the tree discussion is not complete, but this thread should either get back on topic, or be renamed.

Tim –
I think you are well on your way to repairing the sins of your zealot predecessors. You still have the problem that a few so mentioned have found their way back into politics via commissions. I couldn’t understand why FLO inserted itself into politics, but I think if you had your way, you would return FLO to an academic/social group.

Kelly,
The presence of FLOS members on commissions, or the Village Board for that matter is not something I intend to control. Our town is blessed with talented people in all quarters who wish only the best for Riverside. They find their way onto FLOS, Juniors, church groups, Seeds, Scouts, T-ball teams because they see the good that can come from an act of giving back to their community.
Perhaps we all need to focus on that which is most important, our families, friends and neighbors that make this a great place to live.
