Kelly, I may ask you to be President of the League. I'm hoping the Chamber will get behind this idea. Let's get it going. Avanti!

Hey Spatney, give the bocce ball court a rest. Thats the last thing this village needs.

A thing this planned village, one of the first planned communities, ironically needs is some planning. Part of planning is thinking, brainstorming, and imagining. Bocce seems fun and simple. I like that it seems different and unique, and not something one sees all around. To me, these are also attributes of Riverside and therefore there is a kinship there. Maybe this can be something to get the attention of others? If the cbd is moribund, maybe we need some 'different thinking'.
This reminds me of a letter to the editor someone wrote on the subject of attracting folks to Riverside.

Mr. Foley - you seem to have a problem with spelling and word usage. You have your ideas, I have mine. Many people, including some of the people that own businesses in the CBD seem to like the idea. If you want to bring people to the CBD to support the merchants you need something to attract them. And we need to have something for kids to do, and oldsters too. What do you think will do that?

I saw this comment on the Landmark site. Some merchants seem to have other ideas for 61/63.

Article comment by: David MoreauNow that the 61-63 E. Burlington parking lot has been officially nixed by our Village Board, and the space will lay fallow for an undetermined amount of time, it's time for some creative speculation on how the village can use the space and recoup the money that it has already spent on the real estate... or not.
Grumpy's, just down the street has been soliciting ideas from its customers. Here are a few offered to date, in no particular order or appropriateness: • Hooray. Now we have a place for someone to sell Christmas trees to us in December! • Remember those little miniature putt-putt golf courses that flourished in the • 60's. Let's put one there! • Let's put a few bicycle racks there. There is no place to park bikes anywhere else on Burlington Street. • Bocci Ball courts. • Porta-potties. Elicit some compassion to downtown shoppers. When you gotta go, go on us. • A great site to have a monthly flea market in the warmer months. • Plow it up and designate garden plots for apartment and condo dwellers to cultivate, like so many other communities do. I'm sure the Landmark will entertain further comments and ideas from its readers. David Moreau Grumpy's

Mr. Spatny, sorry for the last spelling error. I feel we need parking for the town. Last night 200 people were at the RJW Pizza Feast at the Village Center and there was no where to park in town. Now imagine that building being all leased out and having several thriving stores it would be the same way everyday. We need excitement and Dave at Grumpy's has some great ideas. Mr. Spatny would the Bocce Court have a wet bar.

Michael - I was in town twice last night while that thing was going on. There were almost no cars around Guthrie Park and I saw 4-5 spots at the train platform. I drove around the lots behind the businesses and there was no one - or almost no one - parked there.
It happened that there was "Family Fun Night" at Hauser school at the same time, so that loaded more cars on to the area around the VC. A very unusual occurrence. I can't imagine the VC leased out. I believe the rent structure is too high for the traffic count. If it had been smaller, lower, fewer units, and built back 20 more feet from the corner someone might have been enticed to put in a "Watertower Bistro" or some such, with chairs and tables out front. I very much suspect we have another "Old Chicago" in our midst on what is arguably the best corner in town.
The Bocce courts I have visited usually have some kind of food/bev arrangement, either with a nearby place or an on site vendor. They are all BYO friendly, and some have grills where families throw BBQs, etc. It might not be the thing for Riverside, but they work well elsewhere, and should be considered.
I'm all for parking but favor assembling the rear reservoir parking idea as in the plan that Chris put up for me on the other thread. I believe the people that have underutilized space behind the Burlington businesses should get together to work out a plan to share it.

Spatny - You missed a prime opportunity today to launch Riverside Bocce. The car show was hopping, someone had the where-with-all to have a bean bag tournament.
So - get on it!
Also – the Arcade looks so terrible – why don’t you organize the schools to draw murals on paper and put them up? No study necessary.
Us girls could use a hand now and then doing things around here, jump in any time.

I made a pitch to Preservation, the Chamber and the Board on doing a better board-ip and murals for the Arcade. It's already under way, thanks to Preservation and especially Aberdeen Marsh-Ozga. I'll have to send you bulletins to your email to keep you up-to-date. I had the Avanti in the car show - didn't see you. I found the pix of the 50s model that you remind me so strongly of...
