The following from this morning's Village E-Flash. Village staff worked throughout the night and are hard at it today as the snow finally appears to be tapering off:

The Village of Riverside continues to work to recover from the heavy snow we have received in the past day.

While our Public Works crews work as quickly as possible to clear the streets, your help is appreciated. If you do not need to be driving on the streets, please stay off to allow the snowplows to work. Cars stranded on the roads make plowing very difficult. Please do not push snow into the street when clearing your driveway, this further complicates snow removal. If you do choose to remove the snow from your property, please take your time and avoid overexertion. The removal of heavy snow can cause serious injury, including heart attacks.

If you are without power, please make sure you have called ComEd at 1-800-Edison1 (1-800-334-7661). Even if your neighbor has called, it is important for you to call to help ComEd understand the scope of the outage.

When moving snow or driving on the streets, please be aware of how your actions are affecting your neighbors. If you have the opportunity, take the time to check on your neighbors.

Just drove around the village - a beautiful place after a big snow. Noticed that the streets upon which the RCA's own Gorman, Sacchi, Shevitz, Reynolds reside are nicely plowed. Most others are yet to be plowed.

    Coincidence, I think not.

My street has not been plowed as of 4 p.m. A village truck with a plow attached to it drove by---without the plow in action. Not sure why or where it was going, but it would be nice to have a clear street.

I would like to publicly thank John Mulhern.
He saw me shovelling, pulled up in his big truck with plow and said, "its the neighborly thing to do"
    Thanks John!

I was around in Riverside for the snow strom in 67 then 77 and 99 too. I've got to say I cannot believe the speed in which I see things being cleared up. Downtown is totally open. All main streets are good. A few side steets need attention and most private drives are clear. I just went out to Downers Grove and back in one hour with no problems. I mean it, I am amazed. In 67 every thing was shut down for 3-4 days. Today things are being cleared up in 8 hours.

The difference is that in 1967, we were totally blind-sighted by the snow. We had never had that much snow before. How many people back then even had snow blowers? We had warnings this week about what to expect. Schools and businesses closed well in advance of the morning so that we could clean up.

    Oh, Come on.
    I was breathing in 1967.
A Good neighbor is a good neighbor.
Thanks again, John Mulhern, for helping out a neighbor.

There were a lot of neighbors helping neighbors. That's what makes this community great.

    The below from this morning's Village E-Flash. You can sign up to receive the Village E-Flash here: http://www.riverside.il.us/index.asp?Type=DYNAFORM&SEC={53DA5974-9200-4544-8021-CA0889C2FF59}

The Public Works crews appreciate the cooperation we received staying off the streets so they could work as quickly as possible to clear the snow. The Village would like to remind you that snow removal is physically very strenuous and you should be careful and not over exert yourself.

If you are shoveling or having snow plowed please use extra caution around gas meters if they are in the area being cleared so the gas lines are not damaged. If you smell natural gas you should call 9-1-1 so the Fire Department can respond and check the situation for you.

We also ask that if you have a fire hydrant near your home that you make sure it is accessible for the Fire Department. Some hydrants get buried during snow removal and we need your assistance to remove the snow from the hydrants.

Please continue to check on neighbors and assist them if necessary. If there is a specific need that the Village can assist with please call. If it is any type of emergency please call 9-1-1. If it is not an emergency please call either the Village Offices during business hours at 708-447-2700 or the Police Department anytime at 708-447-2127.

We all realize the added stress that this type of winter storm and cold weather places on us all. We appreciate your continued patience and assistance as we work to address any remaining issues related to the recent weather.

Noticed the sidewalk leading out to RB was not cleared, forcing all the students to walk in the street. Shouldn't this stretch have been a priority for the safety of our kids?
