The Village of Riverside Safe Environment Commission presents the "Keepin' It Real" Burglary Prevention Program.

The Riverside Safe Environment Commission, in cooperation with Riverside and Chicago Police Departments, will host the "Keepin' It Real" Burglary Prevention Program on May 3, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Riverside Township Auditorium. This program is unique in that it brings convicted burglars into our communities for them to share the who, what, where, when and why behind residential burglary.

"The State's Attorney Office recently held this program in Oak Park and it was amazing. These former inmates share valuable information with residents about why they chose the houses they did, what they were after and when a home is the most vulnerable. Even more importantly, they shared what deters burglars from coming into a community and what you can do to protect your home and belongings," said Assistant State's Attorney and Safe Environment Commission member Kelly Navarro.

The program will be brought to Riverside by Officer Maudessie Jointer of the Chicago Police Department and the SAFER Foundation. The event will include a welcome by Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel, an overview of the Riverside Safe Environment Commission as well as a brief discussion on current Riverside crime trends.

    Police Issue Scam Warning

The Riverside Police Department would like to warn residents of recent scams that have been attempted in town.

One scam involves workers appearing on your property to check your water heater or some such to gain access to your home. Once inside the home, the worker keeps you distracted talking with him or showing you the "problem" while his partner(s) burglarize your home.

Another scam involves people coming to your door claiming they need help and this one involved a heavy set male, heavy set female and a child. Once they get your attention, they force their way into your home, usually to commit a burglary.

Should you have anyone come to your home to do work unannounced that you are suspicious of, call the police. If the workers or people you call on are legitimate, it should not be a problem, if not, they will likely leave quickly. If you are the victim of one of these scams, please call police immediately.

There have been several attempts in the last few days of these types of scams being attempted. The attempted scams have taken please on the 200 block of E. Quincy and the 2800 of S. Harlem.

When in doubt, please call us out.
