"In west suburban Riverside, almost 80 percent of voters rejected a proposal to establish a tax increment financing district in the national historic landmark village.
"I'm disappointed with the outcome of the vote," said Riverside Village President Harold Wiaduck. "It was voted down because some people were successful with their campaign to circulate information that wasn't accurate. The TIF is one of what may be a number of solutions to help address our financial issues and to revitalize the business district."
Lonnie Sacchi, a member of the community organization Concerned Citizens for Riverside, said he believes the TIF program is a hidden tax increase that would entice development and tarnish the rural atmosphere of the village.
Wiaduck said board members will consider voters' opinions, but trustees will have the final vote on the TIF in the coming months.
"The board will insult the voters of this village if they decide on a TIF," Sacchi said."
