According to the most recent Riverside study, the highest and best use of the Burlington lots is to cover with gravel and park the RVs and Campers.

My understanding (and I could be off base here on some of the details) is that foreign (that is, non-US companies) that sell fire insurance or otherwise provide fire insurance policies in Illinois pay a certain premium out of the proceeds of those policies to the state of Illinois, and those monies are distributed to local fire departments. The foreign fire tax board, which is probably composed of firefighters, is charged with administering those monies for the benefit of the fire department.

Campers park behind the Police station at the Village Hall. The price must be right!

Interesting choices on the Plan commission. Jane Archer and John McKenzie are replacing Mike Sedivy and Doug Pollock. As for qualifications, I think Jane is a nurse, and I think the back of her head appears in one of the RCA campaign ads. I don't know John McKenzie, but I'm pretty sure he was an RCA supporter. So much for the end of cronyism. Maybe someone who knows him can chime in.

Good news. Actually, my recollection of Ms Archer is that she was heavily involved in planning issues for a historic town she formerly lived in. I think this barb more suited to at least one candidate who ran in the last election, but I notice you did not aim it there at the time. That person was/is also an applicant for commission positions for which they have no relevant experience or expertise.

I think the commissioners are a function of who steps forward. Just because you know someone does not make him or her unqualified. I can think of some unqualified people who I wish would depart. I don't think you can have people who are actively hostile either personally or philosophically on the commissions, as their role is advisory. There are some people I wish would have the class to resign also. As to cronyism, it was the former president who changed the rule in order to appoint the heads personally.

I think merit should be the sole consideration. But naturally philosophical vision enters into it. If someone is pro-development and the board majority is not, that is just a waste of time not calculated to yield relevant or valuable advice.

I am glad to see changes in the Plan Commission. A commission that votes 5-2 to put bars next to single-family homes and then has to be put down by the board has a problem, in my view. These people were completely uninterested in any resident objections to this.

I agree to an extent--you certainly wouldn't want to appoint someone to a commission whose sole goal is to be obstructive. However, it seems to me that differing views are helpful, unless the goal is to have a commission that simply parrots the views of the administration. To me, the ideal planning commission could include a member of a preservationist group, a representative from the business community, and someone affiliated (in an administrtive or leadership position) with one of the Churches in town. Maybe by listening to diverse views, and understanding how the other side thinks, consensus can be reached.

Yes, that would have been good advice for the former board. As it is, they packed the commissions with plenty of friendlies to provide just that sort of diversity. Some of them even have relevant experience or expertise, some do not.

Common - Aren't we getting a former losing candidate and prosecutor on the safe environment commission - if she can learn to operate as part of a team? I thought I heard that...

Don-Aren't we getting a former losing candidate and prosecutor on the safe environment commission - if she can learn to keep quiet and stop bringing attention to all of the problems that the new Board is creating? I thought I heard that.....
