    http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2009/10/property-taxes-going-up-in-chicago-and-cook-county.html

    Highlights:

    • Despite last year’s housing market crash, tax officials calculate that property values for tax purposes rose 8.23 percent in suburban townships...
    • Some of the biggest percentage tax increases were logged by smaller taxing bodies
    • While this bill is about 3 months late (good news) the first one next year will only be about 3 months away (bad)

Could be worse. In that article, some bills up 18% or 20%. Ouch.

Daley offering the following to Chicago homeowners whose taxes went up:

if your taxes went up more than $350, they will give you $200
if your taxes went up less than $50, or your income is too high, you get nothing
I guess if your taxes went up somewhere between those two numbers you proportional amount

does anyone know when the current property tax bill will be available to see? Or if it is already in the system, pls provide a link to find it. I think it is due 12-1, but I cannot find what is due the 2nd half 2009. ouch is right.

one odd thing I saw on my tax bill is that my land, building and total assessment was down from 2008, but the total market value was WAYUP from 2008 - I am trying to square this. How much is the amt due based on mkt value?

What a rotten bit of news. The sting would be lightened if the money at least went to the Village instead of Cook County. The Village’s levy does not increase and we are stuck with the same old pie.

    What a rip.

As much as I dislike Todd Stroger and his little army of cronies, I don't think this increase can be laid at his feet. County taxes didn't go up--the increase was in the smaller taxing bodies--Forest Preserve, MWRD, etc. There's also the issue of the homeowner's exemption being phased out, which is the responsibility of Springfield, not Cook County.

well, I got what I wished for in today's mail - the 2nd half 2008 property taxes. My '2008 assessed value' went up 33 pct from '2007 assessed value'. I thought that property value went down in that same time frame - you know, the real estate bust. anyone, Please clarify.

Further, the difference between the 1st half 2008 billed amouont and this 2nd half billed amount is that the 2nd half bill is 37 PCT more than the first half bill. My recollection of other yrs is that the 2nd half was always *about the same* as the 1st half.

Did other people's 2nd half tax bill also go up (significantly) form the first half?

wtf happened from the first half to the 2nd half of 2008?

I see that I still have some sort of ho exemption. Is this the item that is being reduced per johnm's post above? And this was springfield's doing? who in springfield?

An increase such as this WITHIN ONE YEAR is INSANE. How can anyone plan or budget with an increase like this happening?

Does anyone know whether the county offers some sort of payment plan for property taxes, especailly if one is in extreme financial straits?

As long as the people of the Cook County and the State of Illinois keep electing the same people to office, taxes will continue to rise unchecked. County and state government is ever expanding. The population of Illinois hasn't risen significantly in the last thirty years but the size of government has expanded by tens of thousands of jobs. How is that paid for? By you and me. Look at District 96, over $170,000 for laptops for 5th graders. We paid for that. DISGUSTING.

Government health care. Who will pay for that? Why would anyone want the government to run health care when the government has proven time and again that it can't run anything effectively. Has anyone paid attention to how the swine flu immunization process is going? Shortages and lines. Good luck, comrades.

While I agree that the laptop expenditure was excessive, especially in these tough economic times, I notice from my tax bill that the d96 tax rate for 2007 was 3.368 and the 2008 d96 tax rate was 3.109.

Does this mean that d96 tax levy decreased over the year? Can someone clarify?
