From the village E-Flash (and I also received two phone calls from Code Red.) I thought they were hooking up Twitter to the alerts as well, but I don't see anything there yet.

The Village of Riverside has received notification from the National Weather Service at this time that the forecast for the Des Plaines River in Riverside is predicted to rise to 9.2 feet by this evening. This is based on the current water level of over 7.6 feet and the additional rain expected today which is forecasted to be 1/2 to 3/4 of one inch of additional rain.

If the forecasted rain is received and the river in fact rises to the forecasted level of 9.2 feet there will be some flooding in Riverside. Again, this information is forecasted and may not actually occur. This is the best information available at this time.

In the event you desire sand and sand bags please call the non emergency Fire Department number (708)447-2123. You may also call this number if you have other questions regarding the current situation.

I empatize with our neighbors whose homes flooded again but I do sense that the incidents of basement flooding in Riverside during this weekend's storm were less than in the storm from a couple of weeks back. Do folks agree? If so, I think the difference was that the Metropolitan Water Reclaimmation District did indeed open the Chicago River locks this time when the deep tunnel system reached capacity (per the Chicago Tribune and other papers). For some reason, someone either forgot or chose not to take this course of action last time and caused a significant amount of unnecessary property damage. I guess we need to pay more attention to whom we elect at the MWRD and also need to hope that they finally finish the Deep Tunnel project so that the system can work at its full intended capacity.
