    Where did you hear this?

I had not heard he was endorsed by anyone to begin with, but I do like his "regular guy" demeanor. From the little I've seen he would likely represent the majority well~

Wow, I missed that...sadly it was likely not an accident.

You can find info on the Louis Surprenant and the other candidates here and here

As well as there are some sound bites from the forum here.

This is all I'm aware of. If you find other info, please post links.

The incumbent in D96 got the fewest number of votes in a field of 4 where we selected 3.

Wow, a very very tight finish for the 4th seat!

    -Garry Gryczan 14.94% 3,065.
    -Tom Powers 14.63% 3,001.

Considering the experience difference this was a surprise to me.

    Powers:

While at District 95 I have participated in hiring two superintendents, two principals, two directors of special education, passing one referendum for the education fund, implementing a $10,000,000 renovation project and addition to our two schools and aligning and expanding the curriculum. During my tenure we also negotiated three teacher contracts including the current contract that is tied to the CPI (how districts receive their funding) and has a merit based goal system that challenges the teachers to innovate and rewards them for success. We achieved all of this while maintaining financial recognition from the State of Illinois. I believe this experience, coupled with my desire to continue to raise the bar in every area, will be an asset to the district and the board.

    Gryczan:

Currently serving as Chairman of the Riverside Economic Development Commission and have been active in coaching baseball, basketball and soccer. Served two years as Treasurer of Central School's PTA.

I wonder if the difference was the "organized campaign" for Gryczan or if there were folks that did not like something about Power's service for D95????

Organization is VERY important in elections. How else would "W" have gotten elected, a guy who anytime he opened his mouth was embarrassing, or a smalltime "community organizer" come State Senator, Obama, have gotten elected? Answer: KArl Rove Inc and David Something-ski inc.

Locally, the Landmark has the quotes and the explanation. Question: What did Powers mean when he said "but this is not supposed to be an agenda-driven position"?

Gryczan said late Tuesday night that he thought the shoe-leather campaigning he and Keen did made the difference in the tight race for fourth.

"I think it was the fact that we were out there going door to door, meeting people, listening to them, getting our name out there," Gryczan said. "We had hit every community - Brookfield, North Riverside and Riverside."

Powers, who currently serves on the District 95 school board, took a totally different approach to the campaign, appearing in two candidate forums and doing newspaper endorsement interviews but eschewing other forms of campaigning.

"I did not go door to door, I did not put up signs," Powers said on Monday. "Campaigning just doesn't feel right. I know it's absolutely acceptable. Don't get me wrong, I know it's acceptable, but this is not supposed to be an agenda-driven position."

The fact that Powers lost by ONLY 64 votes and did not do significant campaigning attests to the good perceptions people had about him and his previous work in the feeder district 95. As the LAndmark said in its recommendation about him, it was an easy call (along with keen).

    .

I also discovered from the link above that Grycan and Hruska did not respond to the Clarion request for a candidate statement - and they still were elected.
