Downtown Proposal

Interesting article and editorial in the Landmark about Scott Zimmer's proposal to extend a portion of the CBD sidewalk to create a "boardwalk" by expanding the sidewalks on a stretch of Burlington.

Similar concepts have been discussed on this site before, and most people seemed enthusiastic. Sells and Sussman seem to like the idea, and Gorman seems to conditionally approve. Any thoughts? I think it's a great plan, and fits in nicely with the vision of a more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly Riverside that has been discussed recently.

Article in Landmark about a boardwalk proposal sounds great!

What makes a lot of sense is that the Arcade location for the chew and grumpy's had just enough space to handle the foot traffic congestion and the new location is very tight. To make it more "euro-cafe town social" feeling would be a big improvement over both scenarios.

That being said, the parking lot issue now makes more sense...needed to replace the 7 spots (or more) that would be lost doing this. I suspect that these were thought about together and now have to be broken apart due to the "dynamic" we have going with the parking lot.

I like the idea and wonder if it could not be done as some form of trial basis while gaining an "idea about knowing what's all out there". If approached with minimal complication, the cost should be less than we've spent on various consultant engagements (thinking 16x146=2336sqft * $6/sqft for concrete = ~$15k...call it a $30k experiment in what a possible "vibrant CBD" could look like).

I know, I know, tight financial times...I still like the idea.

  3. I agree. It sounds great and could be the start of a rejuvenation of the downtown area.

I like the idea also. The Chamber, from the members I have spoken to, are in favor of this idea. That being said. This will have to go through several commissions before it hits the Board of Trustees for a vote of approval. LAC ,due to possible loss or relocation of planters. Preservation because you will have to erect some type of barrier at curbside to prevent pedestrian/car accidents and preservation controlls hardscape. Finally the Plan Commission must give its Ok on the design, etcetera. If all goes smoothly we could possibly see this done by next summer. In order to go smoothly though I think there needs to be a large vocal support for Scotts plan.I hope he gets it. He has my support.

It sounds like a really progressive idea. I can't imagine the RCA/Olmsted Society would be in favor of it, but hopefully I'm wrong.

This should highlight the importance of proceeding on the parking lot. Increased parking is necessary to facilitate growth as a result of great ideas like this one.

Thank you Scott for thinking out of the box!

Ask him who gave him the idea and the initial drawing and how long ago.

Here's an interesting article and some comments.

Gee, Don. Let me guess. Was it you by any chance?

I'd imagine you'll be lending your support to this then, right?

Of course I'm for it. I was going to propose it to the KRush admin way back before Fresh Express moved and Scott opened. When I saw him trying to get that Board to OK a couple outdoor tables Igave it to him instead. The original concept was to utilize three spaces in front of the Chew and Fresh Express (Grumpy's), meandering the sidewalk and curb outward (north) so as to provide for seating next to the building and a planter buffer inboard of the sidewalk. I thought a similar one-two space meander should go up in front of the Hot Dog emporium so as to provide bicycle relief and outdoor eating space there too. That space would view toward Centennial and Central school and could be very nice. It would also make the walk along this straight street much more interesting and help all these establishments.

I also looked at and measured one off on the other side of the street just west of the flower shop so as to provide similar "cafe" seating for the VC (with a view to the water tower, and likewise make that side of the street more interesting. With appropriate planters to screen patrons this could quickly transform what is a very uninteresting street scape into something faintly European. Doing all three meanders would result in seven spaces being utilized, but spread across a wider area of the CBD.

Personally, I have always thought the Water Department building in Centennial would make a great location for a rest/cafe with outside seating around it on the park side with a great view of central Riverside. Perhaps Rec could have been better located into the old youth center or the Arcade on the Quincy side. The building still has the service drive access which could be spruced up and doing this would provide a "town square" Riverside-sized spot for eating and imbibing (Pizza in the Park?). At that time hope was on the rise that a restaurant would go into the VC, the Arcade would be completed, and this would have given us a number of spots for small restaurants - which was what people said they wanted.

Contrary to the posts I've seen around, I think most/all the Board members favor this kind of thing. Spreading it out to benefit more potential sites would probably make all the non-eatery businesses benefit from increased foot traffic. I'm against speed bumps and fake water features.

Just to make sure Spatny's last statement doesn't get lost, I'll "2nd a nea" to speed bumps and fake water features!
