I don't even know of a good article to start with for Chicago, how Daley is going to fill the budget gap. No new taxes or fees, but spending a lot of that parking meter money, something like $400M.
the Franklin Park president has called on Cook County "authorities" to look into it? that's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time!
I remember in the 80s the greasy spoons and bars still had poker 'games' in them; there was no gambling, of course. Which reminds me of the talk of gaming machines that the state is going to allow, with a share of the revenue for all. I wonder if Riverside has a prohibition of gambling or gaming machines already. I've seen a lot of municipalities swearing off the gambling machines and figured that maybe Riverside already had an ordinance prohibiting gambling.
The Franklin Park story is scary and a perfect example of what happens when leaders of municipalities are inexperienced and don't keep funds in separate accounts with enough money for the project or enterprise.
I’m worried that this might happen here in Riverside if the board keeps moving money from our capital account to pay for day to day expenses. At the budget hearings, Lonnie Sacchi said his goal is to find a revenue source for the capital fund. Anyone have any ideas?
I don't think there is an ordnance on the books prohibiting gambling - I remember Jack Wiaduck speaking about this at a recent board meeting. I sure hope the board passes one soon before we find video poker machines in the Minute Man gas station and Riverside Foods - it's bad enough that they sell lottery tickets.
what's wrong with selling lottery tickets?
Run for the hills - the Puritans are coming! Maybe we could have stocks built in Centennial for parking violators. Prohibiting gambling works almost as well as Prohibition did.
I think some Chicago Alderman said something about the casinos in Indiana: if they're going to gamble, why not have them do it here. Something to that effect.
Ah, here it is:

"All one has to do is drive through those parking lots in Northwest Indiana and see all the Illinois plates,'' said Finance Committee Chairman Edward M. Burke (14th). "If those folks are gonna lose their money, they might as well lose it in Chicago."
"We've got to do something to generate some revenue,'' said Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th)
sounds like a plan. we should get in on the action. a casino would revitalize our cbd
