From the Village of Riverside 12/26:

The Village of Riverside has been advised by the National Weather Service that there is the potential for flash floods and significant flooding in our area. The NWS is predicting that rain will begin during the evening hours on 12/26/08 and continue until the evening hours of 12/27/08. These storms will have the potential of producing heavy rains and may produce from 2-3" of rainfall during this time period. Runoff from this rain and the melting of snow and ice already on the ground, along with the soil only being able to absorb a minimal amount of moisture due to being mostly frozen, will create the potential for significant flooding.

The Village of Riverside is advising residents to move any valuables from low lying areas in and around their homes to higher ground.

The Village of Riverside does not know for certain what the outcome of this rain and flooding may be, we can only prepare for the potential and predicted problems.

If the unfortunate happens and we flood again, I hope the village will have learned from the Fall flood. Residents on Pine and West and other affected streets need to be able to drive to their homes with gas cans to keep pumps and generators working. The village in the Fall failed miserably in accommodating the needs of the residents. As a flood victim, I am stressed enough dealing with the problems in the house without having to deal with the police preventing me from getting gas to my pumps.

The water began breaching the little spot just below the Little Dam about 30 minutes ago - and it is now pouring into the Swan Pond - again. Ch. 5 was down there at the Big Dam setting up for a report - it is a very high volume this time - so there will probably be 3 ft. plus in the Swan Pond by dawn. Best of all - snow is predicted this evening. Look for road closures in the AM. Welcome to Chicago!

More from the Village, "December 2008 Flood Event Update, 4:25 p.m.":

Preparations continue to respond to the anticipated flood event. Residents living on West Avenue, Groveland, Lincoln, Pine Avenue and Forest who have been affected in past events may wish to consider relocating until the flood threat subsides.

The National Weather Service indicates the Village is facing a severe threat of flooding with a crest predicted at 9.7' (similar to September event) at 12 midnight on 12/28. To protect yourself and your property:

    • Relocate your cars to one of the designated parking areas. The area closest to you home is:
      HAUSER JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
      65 WOODSIDE ROAD
    • The Village has closed Forest Avenue to assist in our stormwater pumping effort. First Avenue is closed. If additional streets are affected and an evacuation order is issued, egress to the affected area will be severely limited.
    • Move as many of your belongings from the lower level to a higher level in your home.
    • Be Prepared to Evacuate your home. You may wish to find alternate housing by 5:00 p.m. this evening. AT THIS TIME THERE IS NOT A MANDATORY EVACUATION. In the event of a mandatory evacuation, we will notify you as soon as practical. If you leave your property in preparation of the event, to protect your property, please consider shutting off you electric service at the circuit breaker box.
    • If you have special needs or require assistance in relocating, please contact the Fire Department (708) 447-2123 or the Police Department (708) 447-2125.

At some point the village and the state need to address the problem. Responding to floods every few months and every few years is a waste of money and resources. The expense of the Fall flood would have gone a long way to resolving the problem in Riverside. If we flood, this will be the 5th time since I've owned my home. I've just paid for a new furnace, hot water heater and other items. I don't want to go through this again. Frankly, this is wearing thin when the problem can be mitigated.
