From the village, "Riverside continues to prepare for a severe flooding event":

The National Weather Service continues to indicate that the Village is facing a severe threat of flooding with a crest predicted at 9.7' (similar to September event).

Residents living on West Avenue, Groveland, Lincoln, Pine Avenue and Forest who have been affected in past events may wish to consider relocating until the flood threat subsides.

To protect yourself and your property:

Relocate your cars. HAUSER JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 65 WOODSIDE ROAD is one of the designated parking areas.

Move as many of your belongings from the lower level to a higher level in your home.

BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE your home. You may wish to find alternate housing by this evening. AT THIS TIME THERE IS NOT A MANDATORY EVACUATION. In the event of a mandatory evacuation, we will notify you as soon as practical. Current information indicates evacuation may be necessary early Sunday Morning.

If you leave your property in preparation of the event, to protect your property, please consider shutting off your electric service at the circuit breaker box. To do this, shut off each circuit breaker first, then the main breaker. If you have a fuse panel, you will need to remove each fuse and then pull the main fuse out. When you have done this, make sure you close the panel cover.

It is very likely that the Village will need to close certain roads to effectively continue our pumping efforts and protect workers in the area. Flooded roads will likewise be closed. Forest and First Avenues are the first streets affected. Keep this in mind as you travel in Riverside and prepare to leave your home. DO NOT DRIVE AROUND BARRICADES PLACED IN A ROADWAY.

If you have special needs or require assistance in relocating, please contact the Fire Department (708) 447-2123 or the Police Department (708) 447-2125.

As of 5:30 AM It looks like the water is not rising as fast as the iniitial prediction, and may not be as bad as predicted. But still too early to be definitive. Desplaines River Basin is 123 sq. miles, and unlike Holland, we can't build a dike. Floodwater just goes around the end of the berm or enters from Maplewood. If the berm extended all the way to 31st St. the water would just rise there and back up further. The problem is way too much runoff, too quickly, way north of here. If you look at the flow coming out of Riverside at the Little Dam you can see the volume and velocity are both very great and simply have exceeded capacity Testerday, with the rain, melt-off and water already in the ground we had the equivalent of a 6-8" rain over the entire basin. It still flows down hill.

"Flood Event Update" from the Village 12/28/08:

At 6:30 AM the DesPlaines River gauge at Riverside indicated that the river level was at 7.91'. This is slightly below the 8.00' moderate flood stage that the National Weather Service recently predicted as the crest level for the current flood event. The previous prediction indicated a much more severe flood level of 9.7'. The water level appears to be stabilizing, further indicating that the water level will not rise significantly during this event.

The river level remains extremely high and parkland near the river is under water, some of this water is very deep. Residents are reminded that moving water is very dangerous, even when shallow. For your own safety, remain clear from any moving water and standing water. It will likely take more than 48 hours for the water to recede to a level below flood stage.

Residents requiring assistance should contact the Riverside Fire Department at 708-447-2123 or the Riverside Police Department at 708-447-2125.
