I live about 2,000 feet east of Tony Peraica and was awakened at 3:05 tuesday morning by what I perceived (from a deep sleep) to be a faint sound of someone rapidly tapping on a window across the street. The possibility of this being gunshots never crossed my mind. After roaming through my house peering out the windows into darkness I returned to bed and thought no more of it until learning of this today...Aha!

May 7, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Police in the Chicago suburb of Riverside say whoever fired shots in Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica's neighborhood likely intended to hit his home.

Officers discovered seven bullets that hit the home of Peraica's next-door neighbor Tuesday in the town west of Chicago.

How terrifying. Perhaps Peraica would not mind it working for him by implying it was Stroger fans, but who knows? Anyone who comes into town without a muffler to do this is surely an amateur.

I heard a car drag racing down Burlington last night [we're getting a lot of that lately] with a loud muffler and thought, hope it's not them.

I feel sorry for the people on Scottswood, including Peraica.

After reading about the strong arm tactics employed in Russia for people standing out and speakng, I said here,

I immediately felt a strong sense of thankfulness that we can speak out in the country without major fear of reprisal such as this.

While I am still thankful for this right, the shooting at Peraica's, beyond this obvious outlandish close-to-home scare, shows that we are only a few or more degrees - maybe some extra stress from the economy, creating a sense of desperation for those in power, eg - from the stuff that occurs in Moscow.

Here is some more on this subject from the local news channels and peraica himself, who has said,

Police believe this attack is related to my work as a county commissioner -- and it is telling that this violence occurred on the same night the Cook County Board passed my proposal to fully repeal the county sales tax hike.

I will not be intimidated. It's time for us to fight back.

Note also that Peraica seems to becoming more media-internet savvy, which increases his bullhorn, and therefore his profile - and therefore his danger to the status quo.

reminds me a bit of a book I had read many yrs ago by Sinclair Lewis, It can't happen here.
, written during the rise of Hitler in the mid '30s.
