Has everyone but me already seen this? I heard from a Hauser parent that they are looking at widening the sidewalk, doing some landscaping and cutting down a large tree. You can read more about it here, including letting the board of ed know how you feel about it.

thanks , savethetrees, for creating a new separate thread on this. The decision to grant the permit to widen the sidewalk is at tonight's Village Board meeting (730 town hall) and the review and vote of the whole landscaping project will be done at the d96 board meeting tomorrow night, (730 pm blythe). As savethetrees says, get your comments in if you care about this landscaping project that would, in its current design, destroy a viable hackberry tree in front of Hauser and double the concrete of the sidewalk in front of Hauser to 12 feet, in addition to other items such as adding plantings, repairing the old main entrance (I believe).

*To tell the Village Board: send personal emails if you know them to board members,
or click the contact us at the village website, select KRush (village manager) and ask that your comments get to the board,
or attend the meeting and provide public comment

*To tell the d96 board and dr lamberson), follow this link or attend the d96 board meeting tomorrow night.

When I asked someone who is more on top of this what is the magnitude of cost for the hauser landscaping project, I was told that it was not yet known and will be known when (and if?) the board lets the project out for bid at tomorrow's meeting. I believe this is one reason the scope and design of the Landscape project needs to be nailed down 1st.

Here is some more info in a thread that commingles the d96 laptop initiative and the hauser landscape project.

    start of thread...
    http://www.riversideinfo.org/forum/topic/d-96-dollars-and-sense

Note at the start of this thread, it is stated that

A 6 ft. sidewalk will remain in front of Central

Further digging showed that whatever is decided for the Hauser sidewalk widening would eventually also be made at the adjacent Central school in another phase down the line.

    landscape comes in again here.

More background , including a link to the life and safety study that is in part prompting the landscape project - I believe the sidewalk part?- here

    .

To reiterate the Original Poster's link to tell the board (and Dr Lamberson) what you think about this....

RE: Hauser hardscape. The report on traffic that seems to be the cause of some of these modifications has several items I strongly object to:

    1. It is toally unnecessary to change Woodside Road to a full time, 24/7 one way street going north. This would send all the southbound traffic from 31st and Desplaines, even when the school is closed, into Kimbark and ultimately Forest, which is already congested. Likewise, making the short connector Akenside to Woodside one way would be similarly disfunctional.

The problem at Hauser is that there is no enforcement of the “No Parking/Standing “ signs in front of both Central and Hauser. We even get people that park in front of our driveway at 111 Woodside while they go look for their children, blocking our only ingress/egress for a five unit building. We also have teachers that park directly in front of our building and theadjacent properties on up the street five days a week from about 7-7:30 AM to around 4:00 PM.

    2. The existing sidewalk is actually seven feet wide in some areas, plus the curb top. If it is to be widened it would seem that a 24” widening using those blocks that let grass grow through would be a much more attractive to concrete and pavers. They are used successfully in many locations in Riverside. Indeed they would be quite nice for the entire project.

As the plans call for roughly 3000 sq ft of paving going in in front of Hauser, please use something that allows grass to go through. These same blocks could be used to advantage on the area surrounding the play structure at Central.

I heard the architects say that they want to align the sidewalks in front of Central and Hauser in one smooth curve. I assume this means that they iwll want to widen the sidewalks in front of Central. I would be even more opposedto that as that is a very historic and lovely building and requires some green space before it. The set back there is less than at Hauser and should not be cluttered with more concrete sidewalk.

    3. Care should be taken to save the large Hackberry - really the only mature tree in front ofthat part of Hauser that is left. Using the blocks sited above would make this possible and slve the water absorption problem that iwll come with impeermeable concrete.
