Why would we not be piggy backing on this one?

June 15, 2007 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of William Le Baron Jenney (1832—“1907), considered by many to be the “father of skyscraper,— due to the major role he played in the development of metal frame construction in Chicago. Some of his well-known projects in Chicago include the West Parks System (1869—“1871), the Second Leiter Building (1891) and the Home Insurance Building (1885). He also served as a mentor to many young architects that would go on to shape Chicago's skyline, including Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, William Holabird, Martin Roche, William Mundie, and Elmer Jensen (the later two would go on to become partners with Jenney).

Join us in celebrating Jenney's life and legacy through a variety of tours and programs this summer.

William Le Baron Jenney's Riverside - trolley tour

Celebrate the creative genius of William Le Baron Jenney by seeing first-hand one of his greatest projects, the National Historic Landmark town of Riverside, Illinois. While the "village in a park" is a testament to Frederick Law Olmsted's creativity, it was Jenney's engineering that turned Olmsted's vision into reality. The tour will include both landscape architecture and the built environment of Riverside, while focusing on the impact of Jenney and others such as Frank Lloyd Wright. Transportation will be by trolley and on foot. Also included with the tour is lunch at the "Chew Chew," situated in the historic 1870 Arcade Building, and the interiors of a select number of Jenney structures.

Yes, Riverside could be collecting fees like this, and we could probably get people inside some of the houses. It's sad that another entity is sustaining itself on our village when we should be doing it ourselves. Offhand I recall LeBaron Jenney designed the Allen House and also the Water Tower, I believe. I hope the Arcade is looking less like a disgrace by that time.

Funny, I was just thinking of LeBaron Jenney the other day, in connection with the brochure some are preparing on Wright in Riverside. LeBaron Jenney should definitely be included.
