A few weeks ago there was a brief flurry of activity on the building at Longcommon and Burlington. Some of the siding was removed by a couple worthies, leaving lots of old nails and other fasteners protruding from ground level to roof. Then... nothing. Part of the old wood siding is still there, there are wires and conduit from signs etc. hanging, and nothing moves forward. Is the exposure of what was under the siding in some way related to a Class "L" application for a tax rebate there too? I don't know what is happening but those nails and some sharp sheet metal edges should be looked after before some child or dog gets hurt.

I know something of this. Mr Kafka is interested in having landmark recognition of his part of the building as is the case with Riverside Plumbing's. He announced his attention to sandblast and use other vigorous methods of cleaning. He was advised by the Preservation Committee this could damage the prospective landmark, so they are helping him devise a plan to establish both goals. I agree it is most vexing to have to look at it in the meantime.
What I completely fail to understand is the stopping of work on his building further to the east, which now features exposed, unclean plywood and is, if possible, even uglier in its facing than before.
The removal of rusty nails in an area where children walk, tussle as they sometimes will, and ride their bikes is unacceptable. There is all manner of risk, including those that require tetanus shots. Banging them bent, as only some of them are, does not suffice.
I applauded the commencement of this work, little imagining that these buildings would sit in this state of undress with winter drawing on.

I hope they can at least remove the rusty nails and other sharp metal before the grade school kids paint the store windows for Halloween on Oct 18/19.

The Village building department should demand it, or do it and charge the guy. This is a safety issue. Our Village Manager and the Board should look at this. Disgraceful.

Perhaps Mr Forney the building inspector is the one to deal with this before the painting. I would report it, but I DO get tired of being the Mrs Kravitz* of Burlington Street. Anyone?

That's not how it works here. I sent them a complaint about it right after it was done -got no action, no response at all. Same with people that build into the public way, put overbright lights everywhere that shine into other people's homes - etc. It's not what you do it's who you are. From the top down.

"There's something going on here. I don't know what it is ..."
Good one Catherine.

Or maybe you prefer Alice Pearce as Gladys?

Why Chris, of course you know that the first Mrs Kravitz, like the first Darren, is the real one!

Catherine - when we adopt the new system that has a different resident act as Village Manager for the day you can be first. "For all you do, this Plsener's for you."
