In 2008 the Landmark did a piece on teachers salaries.

Private school teachers make considerably less than the public school counterparts. At Fenwick High School, for example, a beginning teacher with bachelor's degree will make $34,555 next year, according to Dr. James Quaid, the principal of Fenwick.

A Fenwick teacher with a masters and 10 years experience will make $48,229 next year, Quaid said. The highest salary at Fenwick, for someone with a Ph.D. and 22 years experience is $71,770.

I know, I know, you get what you pay for. I have had the pleasure of having inspiring, life changing teachers and have had my share of spirtit crushing teachers too. I'm just saying that from an outsider looking in, it sure looks like some teachers at RB are overpaid.

It makes you wonder who is in it for the love of teaching and who is in it for the money, doesn't it?

Thanks for the link, Kelly. It is upsetting to read that story two years later, knowing what we know. In fact, it is downright maddening to read it. I hope everybody takes the time to read it and then reflect on the financial difficulties that they (we) are experiencing right now.

It doesn't seem that they were very *fiscally responsible* as Marciniak said, or that they *protected the financial interests of the district* as Baldermann said. When is the next school board election?

I am less concerned that teachers are overpaid, per se. My issue is that teacher and administrator pay is not linked to revenue or anything else, and continues to rise despite the economic climate.

One interesting way to look at it is that private schools pay teachers less, but they also usually have the benefit of being able to restrict their student population with competitive admissions, etc. This would generally improve the quality and motivation of students and parents.

On the other hand, public schools by law must take all students. So maybe the teachers deserve higher compensation for having to deal with all the issues that come from that...

I don't really have a beef either with what they are paid. My issue is more like yours---that it is not linked to revenue or job performance, and continues to rise in spite of the economic climate.

No, the compensation is probably not double due to dealing with having to take all students. Some of the worst behaved students attend private schools. The compensation is much more directly linked to the teachers unions.

Interesting article about how the D.C. School District and the Teachers Union finally resolved their conflict.

An article in the Sunday Tribune regarding Naperville school districts 203 and 204 mentions that in distict 203:

Its teachers hav aagreed to a pay freeze for the next year and raises tied to the consumer price index in subsequent years.

Per the Landmark, they got rid of Zemen as AD, and released 2 part-time and 2 full-time non-tenured teachers.
