Lombard, IL -The DuPage Theatre in Lombard took its final bow Thursday afternoon as legal efforts to halt its demolition failed and the wrecking crew moved in.
As of 3 p.m. Thursday, all legal protection for the already partially demolished historic building vanished, as the Friends of DuPage Theatre and two residents exhausted their legal options, leaving the village free to demolish the structure.
“If we can't stop it in the next six hours, it will be coming down,— said the Friends' attorney, Mark Daniels, on Thursday morning.
And came down it did.
At about 3 p.m., demolition crew members unlocked the doors to the long vacant theater. Shortly thereafter, equipment moved in to pull out the ticket booth, which is being given to the Lombard Historical Society, said Tom Fetters, the society's president.
“We get to keep that,— Fetters said. “It's sad to see it go down.—
Fetters was one of about 80 people who gathered along Main Street to see the controversial theater meet its end. Some people driving by cheered as they saw the building was being torn down, but not everyone was happy about it.
“I think it's very disappointing,— Angie Johnson said. “I'm all for progress, but how can you move forward if you don't remember where you've been?—
