I think it's pretty cool to go through downtown Riverside at night and see cars parked on both sides of Burlington, as far west as the VC and Buddy Dogs and as far east as Riverside Foods and Arcade Antiques. It used to be such a ghost town.

We learned at the Board meeting last night that the Village sent Calvetti's a letter saying no more live music. It seems the B2 Code requires a Special Use permit to have a live performer inside, and that to obtain that any establishment will have to file a request, have a public hearing, and pay $1000. for that - with no guarantee that you get it. However, if one of the Trustee's will request that the code or ordinance or whatever it is be changed to allow live music indoors then there would be no charge. So, Come On, Trustees, step up and get this changed so that places like Calvetti's, the Chew Chew, Gem Cafe or anything new can have reasonable live music or poetry or whatever indoors whenever they want it. And while this is going on, just forget about enforcing that law UNLESS there is a complaint about noise or some kind of disturbance, which is another code anyway. These places need to be able to have a Sinatra singer or guitar player or a piano player - whatever works for them. If the neighbors haven't complained, why should the Village prohibit this. There were outside speakers playing broadcast music at the old Chew Chew and Grumpy's and no one ever complained. The Board says they want to encourage businesses and collect sales tax, so maybe one of the Trustees that went to Calvetti's and enjoyed this music can step up and help out our local businesses. I hope so....

There was a complaint. Catherine posted it on this site a couple of weeks ago. You pose a good point. Should we define what acceptable live entertainment in an establishment which serves liquor is? Maybe this is just getting back to the tavern thread. It might be best to leave this "third rail" alone until after the election. We wouldn't want to have anyone go out on a limb, break ranks, etc.

Once again, Fred, you should go to meetings before opining. The law is passed. Tavern is defined as requiring a kitchen and the serving of food. In the B1, only on Harlem and not near residences. That leaves about 2 stops. This has already been voted on, there will be no revisiting after the election. Bars are the third rail. The law on the noise ordinance is already on the books. It is not hard to abide by it. Avoid amplification. Keep it within your four walls. This is a painful limitation on my own inclinations in my condo, but I wouldn't dream of forcing other people to listen to my music, classical, Frank or otherwise. I've got to keep it down.
My remark was an observation. It is for those who have to live next to it to make a complaint, as I said then. On the holiday stroll, we walked by Calvetti's and noticed the music could be heard on the street and that the window was vibrating from it. I said, hoo, I wouldn't want to live above this! But that's their problem; maybe nobody thinks the tenants are important; maybe they don't care. Or maybe someone called in a complaint. Perhaps this is one reason they can't sell any condos above the retail space on the 2nd floor of the VC, I don't know. I do think when you live in the CBD that street action and public places were reasonably foreseeable.
I only ever heard music from Grumpy's during the day. And, very important, let's get real, it was music no one could find offensive. Classical music and standard jazz, unamplified, I doubt anyone would object to. It is not karaoke with bad singing audible outside the establishment by residents not wishing to participate.
I don't really understand how any activity that does not violate the noise ordinance or disturb the peace could be within the ambit of further governance. There is such a thing as soundproofing and proper placement of the musicians to avoid disturbing the peace. It's done every day. There used to be live music at Chew Chew's regularly.
I don't know what you mean by breaking ranks or going out on a limb. I am not aware of anyone in the frame but David Lesniak who was pushing bars in this town in the first place. Why do you always have to pick a fight?

NASA to Launch Planet-Hunting Kepler Spacecraft Tonight
...
Kepler will stare at the region for at least 3 1/2 years, measuring the light from 100,000 stars every half hour with a 95 million-pixel camera to watch for the slight dip in a star's brightness that signals a planet moving across it as seen from Earth. It's the equivalent of trying to spot a flea crawl across a car headlight from miles away, NASA has said."We certainly won't find E.T.," Borucki said. "But we will find E.T.'s home by looking at all of these stars."
