I believe President Waduck said that after the Evening with Olmsted that "Olmsted isn't so scary anymore" or words to that effect. They definitely portrayed the "Evening" as endorsing the TIF and will also cherrypick the "results (as collated by the Village Manager) of the workshops for all the pro-TIF sentiments thay can find. We need to see a copy of the materials they have at "their April 14 & 28 "workshops" to see what the input documentation is. Of course, as we were told (for the benefit of the TV cameras) there were "many aspects" of the TOD Study that people liked and thast would come about only with a TIF. The next thing to look for will be the re-do of Centennial Park (Industrial Site/Plaza) because they will certainly attempt to execute the dismembermemnt of that already tiny plot by inserting the parking in an attempt to make up for what they gave away at the VC.

Well, I suppose to this lot, Olmsted will prove to be their Christmas Carol.

(Letter from the NAOP to Riverside Trustees)

    April 6, 2007

    The Hon. Harold Wiaduck
    President
    Village of Riverside
    27 Riverside Road
    Riverside, Illinois 60546

    By fax: 708-447-2704

Dear President Wiaduck and Village Trustees:

It was a pleasure to visit Riverside last week. We thank you, again, for welcoming members of our Board and Leadership Council to your community. We appreciated the opportunity to share information about the Olmsted legacy in the Chicago region and examples of how communities around the country have successfully addressed historic landscape preservation in the context of contemporary needs.

As our speakers mentioned, the National Association for Olmsted Parks encourages the residents of Riverside to build consensus around the future of your historic community, develop a set of principles that will guide your planning process, and adopt a comprehensive plan that will protect and preserve the unique character that gives Riverside its national and international historical significance.

We hope the information presented at the April 2 forum will help guide your community as you develop a unified and informed approach to stewardship of Riverside so that future generations will continue to enjoy the quality of place that Olmsted envisioned for its citizens.

    Sincerely,

    Catherine Nagel
    Executive Director

What a great summary and 'take away' from that recent session with NAOP.

Let me reiterate some of the fine remarks...

residents of Riverside to build consensus around the future of your historic community, develop a set of principles that will guide your planning process, and adopt a comprehensive plan that will protect and preserve the unique character that gives Riverside its national and international historical significance.
