New solid waste contract

....was voted on tonight at the Board meeting.

Most of the details are already out there - Tuesday pick-ups only, we get two new wheeled carts (one for trash, one for recycling). No change in yard waste, back-door pickup, or large-object pickup. Nice that the recycling will now be lidded. Less wear-and-tear on our roads, less noise and air pollution, and the new carts are green/brown (except the recycling cart, which has a blue lid) for visual appeal.

But, best of all our rates are going down starting in December, to $37-38 for two months.

Short meeting - 29 minutes, and no drama.

anyone know when the new service terms become effective?

also, if on some week you happen to have garbage that is not an oversize item, but will not fit in the one non-recycling container provided to each address, will they still pick it up? Would there be an extra fee for removal of such overflow ?

    Who is the provider?

Still Allied Waste. They had the best proposal in terms of service and price. Five year contract. Good thing we stuck with them - can you imagine how long it'd take a new provider to learn our streets? :)

New contract starts December 1. They'll deliver the new carts, but I'm not sure exactly when. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a phase-in period of a couple of weeks.

If you don't want your old recycling bins, Allied will take them back and recycle them into new bins.

As for the overflow, I'm not sure. They don't typically charge for extra. I think there was discussion of allowing people to pay a nominal fee for an extra solid waste cart if they routinely filled up their first cart and then some. The hope is that with wheeled carts, people will recycle more, and put less in the solid waste, and therefore once/week pick up with be okay, even for large families. But, even with the most strident recycling, a second waste cart might be necessary for some. For that detail, you'd have to ask Allied. Or the Village Manager.

I was surprised the price is not going down more when I first heard about it. I'm still happy it's just one a week though. Hopefully the village will send out a notification about when Friday pickups will stop, so I don't accidentally put something out that day.

Allied still has to dispose of the same amount of 'stuff', which likely accounts for why our bills didn't get cut in half. They have to take our trash to landfills and recycling facilities, and the total amount won't change by having one-day pick up. I actually thought the new bill would be a bit higher. Call me a pessimist!

As for notifications, we just got our water bills, so any notices will have to be electronic, I suppose. Or, are we due for an Allied bill soon? Obviously that would reach everyone.

Actually, I think the amount of "stuff" that is collected is down and will continue to decrease because no one is buying so much stuff anymore.

What happened to "pay as you throw"? I thought that would have been a great program.

I think that change was a little too radical for the majority. Maybe we'll hear from Tom Jacobs about the pay as you throw plan and how this contract affects that.

Pay-as-you-Throw died a premature death due to lack of political will. 2 trustees were for it, 4 against (evenly split across party lines). Despite overwhelming evidence documented by the EPA regarding the superiority of Pay-as-you-Throw compared to our old-fashioned system (Pay-as-you-Throw is more fair, equitable, and better for the environment), the board chose to avoid true leadership and took the easy way out.

The beginning of the movement to adopt Pay-as-you-Throw in 5 years must begin right now. Eventually, reason will prevail. We need leaders who are true champions for the environment.
