Don I will bring this up at the next chamber of commerce meeting. Interesting idea.

I read Don's valediction with sadness. I will miss his leavening insights and ideas, of which he leaves us today with numerous. Don and I have agreed only occasionally -- but it is through disagreement that ideas are refined and improved, not head-bobbing amens.
I heartily recommend consideration of Don's critique of posting anonymously. Please give it some thought. First, I assert the right of all to post anonymously as an ancient practice of political speech on these shores. Sometimes it is necessary.
But, I also posit that -- as a community forum -- the more here who find a way to state their ideas in their own proper person, the better. I think taking ownership of a view speaks well of both the view and its author. I also know that by posting in my own name I have NOT made certain postings that would have been targeted at a particular someone who had my goat on a given day. Posting as myself -- as Don has always posted as himself -- has helped me avoid the snappy and the snippy reply, be more civil than I otherwise might be and in turn has led to fewer spats, which mainly burn up electrons without improving understanding of anything. I realize others here, including a few named participants, have given themselves to the snappy and the snippy -- and sometimes the downright mean and disgraceful -- without improving understanding of much but their breeding, politeness and issues of self-control. With one tiny exception that arose between us, that we resolved the next time we saw each other at a meeting, Don and I have never had such problems.
An anonymous view may be compelling, but it comes with an asterisk. The asterisk usually turns into a question mark: what is the author's interest? motive? purpose? commitment? Etc. Sometimes the questions overcome the point. On the other hand, when an anonymous point survives scrutiny, it is usually a good one. (For the philosophically inclined -- anonymous postings are practical inverted experiments of Kant's categorical imperative, and thus fascinating at a "global" level, but this is not a philosophy site.)
And, when it comes to responding, I am always uncomfortable replying to a hidden someone. Usually, I end up doing so anyway -- to show that I really do support a given stance, regardless of who is arrayed against it -- but I admit that I resent the critic having it both ways, in the stands and on the field, so to speak.
In the role of critical interlocutor, I think Don has done all of us and the community a service. Having left the forum in the spring of 2007 after campaigning for RB school board, I know time away can be very helpful. Perhaps only a "So long" is needed. In any case, thanks Don -- and enjoy the time off.

I feel the same way about Mr. Spatny.
In the interest of transparency, HABIV is my username, Howard A Brundage IV is my name.

I think bocce ball is a great idea. A well done court (I think that's what they are referred to) would be a nice attraction for all ages.

FYI - quick update. Proposal for Riverside Bocce Courts was delivered to Chamber Pres. and EDC, PLanning & Preservation Committee Chairpersons at Village Hall today. Anyone who wants to comment might likewise contact them or the Board.

Any impressions of the new village manager from last night's meeting? I heard from a local business owner that he had stopped by and that owner had nothing but nice things to say about him.

I have heard all good things!

In the Village Managers most recent contract, I noted that there is a $2,000 contribution to some sort of a deferred compensation program. This is above and beyond the villages pension contribution. I don't know if this is a required contribution, or something negotiated in lieu of something else. I don't know if Katy Rush's contract provided for the same thing. It just caught my eye.
