Trustees Sussman, Scully & Sells save the Village of Riverside 3.5
million dollars by not building an indoor sports complex at Big Ball
Park. This means Riverside did not spend 3.5 million dollars
resulting in a dramatic savings of 3.5 million dollars. This amount
exceeds by several million the amount the Village saved by not using a
search firm to find a new Village Manager.

I love it! It's great when the Loyal Opposition pitches in for the good of all of us. They probably saved us even more by avoiding impact fees, zoning review and all that. But I feel sorry for the lawyers, realtors and consultants that didn't get a taste.

Reminds me of this today from The Onion, America's Finest News Source:

BREAKING: Terror Attack Failure Costs Detroit 10,000 Construction Jobs

Not at all the same thing, but equally funny.

Detroit is in the crosshairs of the Luftwaffe. The German banks that had to eat all those subprime mortgages they invested in there are ready to attack at any time. Want proof? Look at car sales. Dah-deDah-de-Dah. Connect the dots... Where is Pee Wee Herman when we need him? Oh, he went to the movies.... Dahhhhh

Actually - it appears that the Admin has identified and secured some very advantageous funding for some of our pending sewer repair. Could save us half a million and more. See the last Board Meeting's agenda and discussion.

I'm a renter. Like hundreds of others in the Village. We pay our taxes that way. And like all of you, my cost (rent) goes up every year - typically about $40 a month year over year as taxes and costs bite. And unlike homeowners I don't get a deduction.

Then I donate books to the library and trees to the village for the parks, and last year I picked up 1209 bags of trash from our parks and FPs that border our town, and I help out with some other projects like the Aracde Murals, etc. And you, sir?

Mr. Spatny no need to be nasty. I am a tax payer and by my records I paid over 40k in taxes on my two homes in town. I wish I could only have a $40 a month increase in my expenses. As for the other things i have been up to in the 47 years I have been here is to be part of the Riverside Fire Dept. , Serve on the board at the Swim Club , Build over 3.5 million in real estate to contribute to the tax base, organized and started the ice rink crew in town, and oh yes I to have bought over 25 trees to plant on my various properties, I commend you for your garbage pick up its a shame between your rent and my taxes you have to spend your time picking up garbage but I guess our fine Village won't. Oh and I too have given the library books and $2,000 in the last five years.

Well good for you. I choose to live differently, as is my perogative. I wasn't sure who you were - I think we sat and talked at a RBHS football game one time, didn't we? I wasn't being nasty. Everyone pays taxes, one way or another. If you think your taxes are too high than I assume you'd like to see someone try and advocate that we hold the line on increases. I owned a home in Ravinia ,but at my age I didn't want or need to have all that bother. I didn't want to bite off more than I can chew, and I found a place to live that we both like, so we rent. If you know I live here why would you ask me if I pay taxes? Everyone pays- one way or another.

The reason I pick up trash is because other people keep throwing it out, and I don't like to look at it. I live next to a school that it took me three years to get to put out some trash receptacles. My dog ihas better habits than some of the people in this town. The Village is strapped and doesn't have enough people to do everything, so I decided to try and do what I could to help. I wish more people would do similar things... and maybe they do and I don't knowabout it. Everyday I pick up trash in front of the schools where dozens of parents congregate to wait for their kids and I've never seen one of them pick up anything, but I've seen several throw things away. Maybe some of them will read this and change their ways???

There was actually a "big savings" announced during the board meeting on Monday night. It seems that Katy Rush's dying act was to scramble together an application for a shovel ready project under the Federal Stimulus Program. There was some urgency to the project, I guess the deadline was tight. In any event, Riverside filed a grant application to do work on our water system and apparently we were awarded the grant.

Spatny is that the project you were talking about that could potentially save Riverside a bunch of money? I thought they said the project was over 1MM and the Feds are picking up 1/4 of the cost, and arranged for a low cost loan for the rest of the project. Does anyone know more about it? I didn't catch the whole discussion.
