    Per a riversidenewsflash@riverside.govoffice2.com e-mail this morning:

Drinking of alcoholic beverages as well as picnicking is not allowed in the parks within the Village of Riverside. The Riverside Police do not have authority to arrest those drinking alcohol or picnicking in the areas of Riverside Lawn or the Cook County Forest Preserve. However, Riverside Police will notify the Cook County Forest Preserve District Police on all complaints that are received.

    Anyone else find this strange?

I've always thought one of the most enjoyable things about Riverside is the sensation of being "in a park", versus the "concrete jungle" that surrounds the village.

Why would we not allow picnicking in a park?

If we allow picknicing, we can't be discrimanatory about who can do that - meaning 'the others' would want to enjoy our beautiful landscape as well....same reason we didn't want the bike trail through our town. There are signs all along Fairbank (from the dam to RPC, anyway) stating this law. I have also found it quite strange - maybe someone needs to go chain themselves to one of the signs with a
    pic-a-nic basket.....
