fyi, Here is a link to Scoville Square in case someone did not know.

The question of what we (can) do at Burlington and Longcommon, both at Kafka's and at the VC's sites, quickly goes into what can be done with the current or projected traffic that Riverside has or CAN assume. It also quickly goes into the importance of a real plan for 'doing something' with Riverside's business district (Harlem, too).

In short, we all want something that BEFITS, and fits into, Riverside. Not schlocky and mediocre, but something like a puzzle piece in a greater master work.

I think what drove the landmarking of the corner was the simple and related fact that the other half of the building is landmarked. I believe this had to do with the significance of the architect. I do think the brickwork there and in the middle of the block is very worthy and unlikely to be repeated in our time, for proof of which see new developments in town.

Of course it is possible that Riverside could have new landmark-worthy commercial buildings. There is just absolutely no evidence that anyone is willing to hire an excellent architect and commit to excellence of materials. Since two or three members of the board feel developers should have absolute freedom of choice in this area, no one but a philanthropist is going to pay for quality. Look at the new buildings going up in Chicago compared to the old ones: same problem.

So, was it landmarked or not?
