There will be many opportunities in 2011 for the people of Riverside to get involved and give back to their community. One easy and affordable way to participate is through volunteerism, particularly in these tough economic times. The Olmsted Society will provide many opportunities in the upcoming year to join us in our efforts to maintain and improve Riverside.

If you would like to get involved, our calendar of events including the Workdays are now published and available in our Spring Newsletter:

    Spring 2011 Olmsted Newsletter

Otherwise, a current calendar of events is located on our website:

    www.olmstedsociety.org

Thanks in advance to all who have already helped in our efforts and we look forward to welcoming more friends and neighbors in the future.

In honor of National Poetry Month and the first signs of spring in Riverside, the Olmsted Society invites Riverside-area youth in grades 1-8 to enter the 5th annual "Reflections on Riverside" Student Poetry Contest.

Poetry of any length or style reflecting upon Riverside's natural landscape is welcome. $25 is awarded to the winner from each participating elementary and $50 is awarded to the winner of the Junior High Division. All entries will be included in a professionally bound book for the Riverside Public Library so the childrens' impressions, perspectives and creative words can be enjoyed by all.

The contest deadline is April 30th, so as the weather gets nicer please encourage the kids to go out and explore Riverside's natural areas and then to try their hand at poetry!

Complete Rules and Official Entry Forms are available here as a Word Document or as a PDF.

    Hoffman Dam Update

Over the summer, the Hoffman Dam Committee of the Olmsted Society has been working with the Village of Riverside, the Army Corp of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Historic Preservation to ensure the upcoming Hoffman Dam Project included adequate protection for Riverside's landscape. Plan documents have been reviewed and we are pleased that the Army Corp has been quite receptive to our many suggestions. Our suggestions and the Army Corp responses are posted on our website.

Additionally, we are pleased to announce that details of the plans for Swan Pond are now available. This final stage of the project is pending review of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, but highlights include:

Re-Grading of the Swan Pond basin to allow drainage.
Repair of the WPA River Wall.
    Installing a culvert for drainage.
Removing invasive species from along the riverfront of Swan Pond.
    Improving the walking path.

A detailed drawing is included on our website at:

    www.olmstedsociety.org

A full scale copy of the 100% documents will be available for public review at our next Board meeting, Tuesday, September 6 at 7:30pm in Room 22 of Riverside Township Hall.
