No one needs to buy the printer. You send the data files to HP and they produce them and send them back rolled. I did a similar wall mural with a slide from the Smithsonian that I bought back in the seventies, had the space capsules reproduced on canvas for a wall covering about 8' high by 30' long. It was smashing and caused cars to slow down on the Edens! The money the stores put in for the displays is the same as they do for a co-op ad program - for example in a shopping center. Each display would also have a sheet that would tell about the painting and where in the Art Institute they can see the original. There is a display fee paid to the AI and thy get the publicity and help in "bringing art to the people" which is something they like. The description, history on the phone in is a great idea ad should interest the phone company as a trial. they are doing the same thing in Vienna for the historic buildings that have little red and white flags on them and a number. I dropped some copies to Chamber members - but someone has to lead and that should be the Village or EDC. Wanna bet what happens?

If the Chmaber put in x dollars, and the Village, and maybe a few private/corporate donors then the fee could be greatly reduced for the prints. The point is, there is a lot of talk about doing something but no action. Hiring more consultants to list our empty spaces and pair us with businesses looking for space is foolish - businesses will only come in where there is some chance of a customer base and walk by traffic.

Mike - these are not signs - they are displays inside existing wndows. You don't need a permit for that - yet.

When I mentioned 'sign' abovef, I was using that word in a many meaning sense of signs as in indicators, suggestors, 'pointers to' Riverside ('signs of Riverside'), linked to Harrington Park (from HArlem) as a 'sign' or a hint, of the real Riverside, as well as signs as physical advertisements that one hangs somewhere, such as these paintings.

Obviously this general idea would have to be grinded down and detailed out. There were at least three different viwes of this idea so far we see (someone thought we 'd have to buy the printer, for example).

From spatny's last post it sounds like this idea might have to be a partnership with the art institute (as it was in london with their national gallery). It almost looks like we could not display any image (say, the mona lisa) without permission of the image owner. Or am I wrong in that intepretation? I believe I can buy a slide (or a digital image nowadays ) of the M Lisa from the Louvre. Doesnt that give me the right to print it and display it? If we had to partner w/ the art institute, we would obviously have lots of great choices.

I see that spatny here also says that the edc and - or the village admin would need to take the lead on this. However, I believe I heard that the village suggested that mr spatny (or private citizens/biz owners ) can and should take lead on this.

Maybe with that statement the admin was saying to 'do further detailing / vetting of the idea; sounds ok by us'.

This is a way of getting people here with the proper advertising of it. Let's hve other things for them to do (tours, eg) once they get here. Looking further down the road, I can, with corbi328, see a bike shop and bike rentals working here for things for people to do once drawn here with the exotic open air gallery. then, of course, even further fown the road can come the horses and buggies. Experience Riverside as it was intended, slowly. "Come to a place where a man can slow down and live his life full measure. Step back into time, follow the meandering roads and the river and visit Riverside".

Maybe we can take a page out of Disney and pipe Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King into the rocks of Guthrie Park. :)

Art is protected by the First Amendment. I was involved in a court case in Hamden CT where we converted a pylon sign to a piece of art, the Town sued us and we took it to the CT Supreme Court and won.

Don, what about more of a permanent installation with work from local artists rotated in with the masters?

Michael - it was just an idea aimed at generating foot traffic. Nothing cast in archistone. I laid it out for the Board and handed out about ten copies to our "leading" business people, banks, etc. - not one heard from good, bad or indifferent. Frankly, I think the whole bunch are not winners, and as we all know, "Only a winner goes to dinner." Herethe movers and shakers go to the Steak Fry. Small expectations yield zip. "Make no small Plans...."

Maybe a more detailed vision of how this idea could be advertised or 'shown' might help the chamber and the board to see its value and utility.

    eg,

"See art and walk in a masterwork of art; visit Riverside, IL"
    or
"Walk amongst the masters in a masterwork of art; visit Riverside, IL"

captioning a picture or pictures of bucolic scenes of Riverside. This could be shown in Illinois Tourism web site, on bus signs in down town, Chicago, and hanging at Union Station, for example.

A comment on the Steak Fry - I thought the steak fry LOOKED GOOD from my running past it doing a million chores that night. It kind of looked quaint, sort of like a block party in the cbd. Baby schteps. baby schteps. though I was unbelievably busy to sit back and relax there and then - in addition to not being a steak guy - I thought it looked like a neat attempt to inject some life in the cbd. How about 'Steak and Sushi in the CBD'. It's alliterative. Is Riverside ready for Sushi? I am.

Add some live music in Centennial Park, and we got some interesting soup there in that space.

And, Nothin' against Section 8 housing (i have a friend in such housing), but let's get logical: that is a real fine piece of space, especially across the street from $1.5m condos. Can we get the Tower Bldng on theme? Maybe section 8 is not the best use in that area. In this case, we do not have to build NEW things, but re-do / re-use/ re-think the good stuff we have now.

Let's think big AND think small. Let's keep thinking.
