The village plans to let the school’s art classes work with local artists to create mural panels that would go over the building’s 18 boarded up windows. The budget and funding source have not yet been determined, and the project still is in the planning stages.

I see some work going on at the Arcade - looks like patching the area where the canopy was removed. Hopefully a better board up and thorough winterization will come before the snow flies...

Seems like we were talking about 'before the snow flies' with this building last year too.

We were indeed. I went to commission and board meetings last year, and this year, and asked that they attend to this, even if they had to do it and bill the owners. I think that might be underway...

The Arcade Mural project was approved at last nights board meeting. It is a huge project and any donations to help cut expenses would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a link to the schools fine arts blog for the wish list. We are keeping the list there so that it can be updated as items are received to minimize duplicates.

Thanks in advance.
By the way, we have already gotten nearly all the paint necessary for the painting!

Here is my brief on the project.
Theme
Borrow from the current use of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s
“This Place Matters,” but extend the meaning to include both the Arcade building as well as the historic township in which is is located. The mural will express transformation, vitality, civic pride and hopefulness.THIS PLACE MATTERS: Riverside and its Landmark Arcade Building
Design plan
The mural will feature the symbolic assets of Riverside: the river, parks, street lamps, and architectural details, as well as elements of community life including children engaged in play, art, music, and wildlife. They will be visually woven together as a single work via the use of a swirling design element inspired by the Arcade building’s art-glass windows.Color scheme
The color palette will draw from the seasonal color changes of neighboring Guthrie Park in order to tie the many windows and exposures together. As one views the mural wrapping from the northeast corner to the southeast corner, the primary colors will gradually change from wintery blues and grays, to fresh spring greens, to summer brights, and end with a rich autumnal palette. This transformational color scheme symbolizes the many past lives of the Arcade and implies the anticipated rebirth.Style
The painting will done in a loose, painterly style to allow the many student hands and talent levels to work together.Posted Tuesday Oct 6, 2009 14:28 # -
Mr. Faust - since we can't plant any trees in front of RBHS this year, due to construction equipment still there, etc., and then there will be repaving next summer, I'll see if we can use the RBHS Tree Bank money for the Arcade project - I think there is about $800 there. You could contact Dave Monti or Ms. Nardi and they could tell you. I'm sure this will be fine with the donors... and we''l find some other funds for the trees next fall, after the road building...

Maybe Steve Campbell would donate funds if the school would allow those 'dreaded' cultivar trees....What a better place to 'experiment' than an instituion of education?

As I understand it Mr. Campbell builds - or has built - condos in Brookfield and may even have something to do with their Chamber or body like the EDC. So why not use the $5K to plant "experimental" or whatever you want to call them cultivars up at the school, and make it an ongoing project for the ecology club and their advisors to monitor them, etc. The school is in Riverside but serves both communities and more. The kids in the Eco club could become involved in the design, planting and care process and earn some community service credits for same - with input from their instructors and the Village forester. There's your solution - make RBHS a "Living Laboratory" for monitoring and documenting how these trees fare. Run with it...
