RB District 208 questions

Since we had various plates / variables going at the exact same time - a failed referendum that was to address a structural budget deficit, and a major group of trustees' terms expiring, including the president of the board, with a new group just elected, AND a new Superintendant not even sworn in yet, I have some questions about the transition.

    1. When do the new D208 trustees, Keen , Gryzan, Walsh, and Hruska, get sworn in?

1.1. Current Pres Marciniak term is expiring. When and how does a new president of the trustees get decided upon?

    2. When does the new Superintendant, Dr Skinkus, take over officially?

    3. What will change at RB, if anything, next year?

    4. Will those teacher cuts that were voted on last week or two ago be implemented? Would they be done automatically? Are they already done?

    5. Do D208 trustees work/meet the whole year, including the summer , in preparation for the next school year?

    6. Will those 'potential cuts in case the ref fails ' that we saw on the RB website take effect?

    7. Will all of these cuts take effect or only some of them?

    8. WHo would make these cuts - the superintendent, the trustees, both?

8.1. How would the decision to make the cuts to which programs and classes be made? That is, what would the criteria be and would these decisions be made in the open with full public review and comment?

    9. IF these cuts would take place, by when would they have to be decided on for the next year?

    10. LEgally, fiscally, CAN d208 theoretically keep everything as it is now next year (maybe run from reserves or something)? IE - what would happen if we dipped into reserves, or did some deficit spending? Hey , it is the recession - everyone's doing it. We all are cutting, dipping into reserves (savings), and deficit spending.

    11. Who can answer these questions?

I'll start with an email to Dr Bonnette and see what he says.

  2. Hi,

Clarion just ran a story that answered several of your questions.
    http://rbclarion.com/uncategorized/2011/04/07/no-community-votes-down-referendum-3-1/

While I'd encourage you to call the school directly, a few things you asked:

    1. New board members are sworn in on 5/3.
1.1 Board elects its own board president, I believe.]

    2. Dr. Kevin Skinkis takes office on 7/1.

    5. The board has summer meetings.

    8. The school administration develops a proposed budget which is then formally approved or rejected by the board.

    9. The budget is supposed to be on display in July.

    11. Dr. Bonnette or Jim Marciniak could better answer all of these questions.]

Some of these questions I didn't want to address because I would be opining rather than just giving factual answers, but the ones listed were simple enough.

Keep on reading rbclarion.com as long as we're available.

  3. I meant to include these as well if you were interested. Two RB seniors wrote opinion columns regarding the referendum, one before the vote and one after.

Trent Baer wrote "Be Adults, Not Trolls" - http://rbclarion.com/opinion/2011/03/11/be-adults-not-trolls/

Editor-in-Chief Bradley Wilson wrote "Narrow scope of students fails to recognize the essence of education" - http://rbclarion.com/opinion/2011/04/06/narrow-scope-of-students-fails-to-recognize-the-very-essence-of-education/
