RCA kicks off 2011 campaign?

Interesting comment in today's Landmark (in the letters section):

Indeed the RCA has begun their 2011 campaign already, holding a political gathering last Friday evening at Gorman's house with Gorman himself explaining how he can't work with Sells & Sussman and they have to go. He's quite the charmer.

Anyone know anything about this? For some reason, I wasn't invited...

Does anyone know about what, the political gathering? I wonder who Sam D is? I thought it was in Tony M's letter, but your quote was a comment from a commenter.

Right--it was a comment to a letter--not a letter itself. Thanks for linking the page.

This so called party at Gormans house was a clear violation of the open meetings act. Since they played off the party as a way to thank people who helped in the flooding of Riverside. This party was attended by the members of RCA and since I am sure they discussed village business this to me is a violation. Also since I used to live on Maplewood I never saw Gorman ever help out with sand bagging on our block. And as far as cleaning up the river we only need to thank IDOT and the River Rats of Riverside. These two groups have done way more than the RCA. I thiink someone should look into this so called party at Gormans house last friday night.

Good question - was this a campaign function or an official village event? With 4/7 of the Board in attendance, it sure does sound like a business meeting. Except, of course, it was scheduled when 3/7 were out of town. Convenient.

If it was a campaign event, and I was a member of the Riverside Residents for Flood Prevention, I'd be furious at being invited to the village President's house to ostensibly discuss flooding, only to learn it was to discuss RCA. Shameful.

That is a good question. From the comment in the Landmark, I thought it was just an RCA political rally. It struck me as odd that they'd feel the need to start the 2011 campaign this early--particularly since they hold a majority on the Board--but I figured it was just another indication of their fear of dissent and of their desire to pack the Board with their own people. I agree with JillM that using the cover of discussing flooding to get people to a rally is pretty bush league.

On the other hand, if this was a Village event, the RCA is coming perilously close to what some would see as a violation of the open meetings act--if a majority of a quorum is discussing public business in a private meeting, there's a colourable argument that they might be in violation of the act.

Either way, this doesn't seem to have been the RCA's finest moment. Too bad their supporters on this blog don't (or can't) post anymore to fill us in...

It is possible that if some or all of the rca people were meeting at - was it at Gorman's? - that they were huddling to figure out a way to help out Haiti. Maybe "Sam D", the LTE commenter, can tell us. How can we judge and characterize alleged events, people, and people's conversations and motivations without the facts?

Remember the yiddish saying, 'never try to disprove/argue about a myth'.

That would be pretty prescient, since the event at Gorman's was last Friday, and the devastating earthquake was on Tuesday.
