I have worked for corporations and the government. Only salespeople get cars.
Yes, he is brilliant. Or brill, as you might like to say in your faux British moments.

HR - How did I come to $600. a day? Well, I figure the costs have to be at least $140K, and I divided it by 250 work days a year (50 weeks x 5) and that's $560., and then I considered all the stuff I don't know about, like vested pension, medical for the family, etc., etc. It must be close.
I don't know if we owned that little white SUV - Chevy, I think - that Hullihan used to drive. As DPW he had to travel around a lot and get to his office which is on the other side close to Lyons. Anybody know who or if anyone else gets this? What about cell phones? Maybe cable TV at home so she can watch the Board meetings? Lawn service?
Catherine - I think that person must have favored the GOP and knew how tying Mark to some disliked person would go over with that audience. She made other equally foolish remarks and was one of those who was yelling out "she, she" when he used the male pronoun to describe something. These days you can get in trouble just holding the door for a lady, or putting your cape down over the puddles so she won't get her combat boots wet. (That's a joke.)
I'll tell you a little story. One day I was going into the town hall for something. As I approached I saw this elderly woman who had her head kind of cocked to the side start to go up the stairs after a couple of her friends, then sort of wave her head, and go back down and sit on the bench below the stairs. I watched for a bit because she was curled over and I thought she might be in pain. Her friend(s) had gone on inside, so I walked over and asked her if I could help her with the stairs or anything. She must have been seventy (maybe one of my old girlfriends?) She had her hand up to the side of her head as though she was supporting it and a painful grimace, but didn't respond. So I asked her again. She looked at me, lowered her hand, and snarled out at me - "Shut up - I'm listening to Rush!" I saw it was a small radio she had in her hand. So much for chivalry. These days you can get in trouble for almost anything.
My sister works for Blackrock (http://www2.blackrock.com/global/home/index.htm). She is not a salesperson. She has a home office. Her company provides her a car.
My grandfather worked for Peoples Gas. He was an engineer. His company provided him a car.
My other grandfather worked for ComEd. He managed emergency issues. His company provided him a car.
I have a friend who is an insurance adjuster. He is not a salesperson. His company provides him a car.
Your statement that "Only salespeople get cars." is wrong.
Spatny, I have reason to believe the lady was a Democrat. But I could be mistaken.
HR, people whose driving is of the essence of their work have cars. And people who advertise their companies on the car have cars. Driving is not of the essence of the village manager's job. Indeed, her job is to MANAGE the VILLAGE, something most frequently done FROM THE VILLAGE.
I have worked for 3 major transnationals. Only salesmen had cars. I have worked for a federal agency. No one had cars.
I guarantee you the majority will be shocked to find out about this.
hr, catherine said,
Only salesmen had cars
she was summarizing her experience.
all- No one should get cars in Riverside. Take off the use of it on your 1040, if applicable. We are in a budget mess right now. If this way of looking at it is too difficult for an entrenched group, then break it up and get some new eyes with the will and the vision to do this kind of cost cutting. Vote for the RCA to do such new changes. It has been established that candidates coming from the Caucus are not ones that will break up the entrenched group. Just Reynolds with his one vote will not do it.
Catherine - you were closer to her, I'll take your word for it.
So, does anyone else get a car - or the take-home use of a car? Didn't we just buy one to provide for someone in Police or Fire? Of course they might need it - so don't get riled up as I am not saying it is wasteful - just asking a question.
I would like to say something else: I think all the people that are running are signing up to make a large commitment of thought and presence for the next four years. Perhaps some who are retired can spare it - and I wonder how a trail prosecutor with a child or children can - but I applaud all of them for volunteering their time and mental acuity. Every single one.
I also want to rethink another thought I expressed before: Now that I know more about the Caucus system, it appears that it would only take seven people to elct one of their candidates if there was no RCA (or other opposition group.) That would be a majority of the 12-person nominating committee to slate the candidate and then just one person - could be one of those - to vote for him (ooops! I mean her.) I know - you will say that it took even less for the RCA candidates to be slated, but that is not the case because they had to do out and find new people to sign their petitions, etc., and have to reach non-Caucus voters to be elected. I would think every single person in the Village would be glad to see a real, two party contested election where issues of all kinds are raised, debated, shouted from the rooftops and finally voted upon. I know the bloggers here probably think the same.

Impressive. Is everyone else on the RCA slate "brilliant" as well?
(Fyi--my parents are from Ireland--I can be accused of many things, but "faux-British" is really not one of them.)
The four that I know are damn smart, I can tell you that. Maybe we should enlarge this forum to include visits to the Irish Times for a couple of jars - even if it is out of town.
If it quacks like a Brit... Do you also say FRAHNCE? Because that would be the limit. Anyway, all the more reason to stop spelling like a Brit. Be proud to spell like an American.
Everyone on the RCA slate is extremely intelligent. One went to Northwestern Law School, not John Marshall, the westwood.edu of law schools. Shevitz, of course, went to Colgate. Yes, I think they outclass the RP slate in that department, as well as in work experience and knowledge of and demonstrated interest in village issues (because only 2 RP candidates have that.)
But, what of the important question of what the RP is going to do about the budget if they are not going to raise taxes or cut it? Why keep deflecting from that with such nonsense as your pretentious spelling.
PS spatny, needless to say, the Emil Jones woman is an RP supporter.
Don, I prefer the James Joyce, but sure, I'll buy you a drink after the election.
I can believe they are smart--I've met 2 and I was impressed.
But you know who else was really smart? Jimmy Carter.
