and it needs the unpaved natural path - that is a part of that fine experience. I think I agree with Cindy Gustafson that these infrastructure items are maybe not what we want to spend our money on.

Lonnie - that's why people need to follow up these ideas and the watch the details. Otherwise you end up with crap like the concrete Library Circle, which incidentally, is still there. There is no doubt in my mind that some of these people really think their ideas are good for what my pal Corbi calls "the new Riverside families." This really needs watching, because that $10 mil bond issue they cobbled together and tried to pass had a number of "projects" for the Swan Pond in it. I remember when I wrote Jack Wiaduck and asked if we could have one bench down near the Little Dam, even one of those split log benches as are on the nature trail. He wrote me a full page letter telling me why we couldn't add that "hardscape" to the park, and now look at the trash they are contemplating. Schizo-ville, USA.

Don, it's like I told you before. It's not the message, it's the messenger. If you or I had proposed the concrete reading circle, we would have gotten the same letter about not adding hardscape. But since it was proposed by the "Friends of the Library", then it's a great idea. Your letter from Jack should be pasted all over town along with a picture of the reading circle to expose the favoritism and inconsistency.

Since about 2005 it's been more and more difficult to interest the Board in things like planting more trees or providing a few more benches for pople who want to enjoy passive "sports" like watching the river, the animals, the birds. They cry "too much hardscape." But then they turn right around and offer these totally out of place encroachments for our precious few natural spots. One thing they could do immediately would be to move that big dumpster they have right next to the Swinging Bridge and put it back behind the Town Hall, and maybe put a bench over near the Swinging Bridge just so people could stop, rest and enjoy that wonderful view. This would cost them almost nothing and enhance the whole area while we give some serious thought to what to do with the Old Youth Center. Maybe the contractor that is getting the job for the new $18,000 upgrade in that building would do it. That would be the kind of achievement that many, many residents would appreciate. Of course, it's not as sexy as a Library Reading Circle.
