thanks for coming up with these pictures, Chris and Aberdeen.
ARCADE looking SOUTH
It would be great if the Arcade building could be restored to what we see in this picture, including the spire complex at the center of the roof and the brighter white bricks in all the curved elements above the windows. The brighter white is a nice contrast to the red brick and the cream background.
also - another good d.t. project in time is indicated in the picture: the restoration of what is now 1st american bank. This picture shows tall decorative chimneys that coordinate with the other vertical elements on this side of town, the town hall and the arcade.
And, if anyone has been able to stay with some of my threads in this forum (eg, toward an ROD), I want that horse and buggy back! There's a retail niche, a livery stable! We need courage confidence creativity going forward with a good vision as someone in town said. If we can bring out this kind of detail in our redevelopment of d.t., and not do shortcuts, we WILL get our dt eav that will be commiserate with the eav in the Olmsted plan.
I call it Zen and the art of Riverside planning and development.
If we shortcut it and do it too quickly before doing it RIGHT, we will not hit our goal. So I'd say that center spire is not discretionary. we need to do it right. That is when we'll get the benefit, in pencil AND in ink (I have seen the term benefit will 'pencil out', I believe, in this forum) - short and long term.
HENNINGERS looking NORTH
In the Henninger picture, anyone guess the timeframe? 50s? Please confirm my read of this picture:
petersons is the current dry cleaners,
henningers is the current riverside plumbing,
current vc is some other building
there is a butcher at basili's.
I also notice:
* angled parking in front of retail, whereas today we have fewer parallel spots.
* the big balloon tire bicycles. bikes - also good for the 21st century.
Finally, I see a no left turn sign next to henningers. I assume that is a no left turn into Pine av, correct? It would not be no left to forest.
