I did a keyword search on the Illinois tourism site on 'Riverside', and there were no hits - on Riverside, IL.

The closest hit was North Riverside Mall Park.

Do we want to keep people out of town or increase our exposure? Is this an accident / oversight or intentional?

Is there any type of brochure for Riverside? Like a walking tour? I go to different towns and hotels and see the little brochures of interesting (and some not so interesting) things to do in the area.

Is there a walking tour now? I met 2 men this summer in front of the library. They were biking in from Chicago and they were looking for Scottswood. They had a list of houses they were touring in Oak Park and Riverside.

MJVOLO - There are both, sort of. The Historical Museum (in the Wellhouse) has a brochure (maybe more) that shows houses in the First Division and some elsewhere. I think the library has it, along with maps. The Olmsted Society does two different housewalks - North of the tracks and South of the tracks - on regular dates (Sundays, I think) in the summer. I'm trying to interest the Village to roduce a brochure showing Wright and Prairie Houses in town that would be distributed at Oak Park visitors center and the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Gift Shop were hundreds of people on the weekends go to tour the Wright houses there. Nobody seems interested beyond saying "That's a nice idea." It would be cheap to do and bring in a ready audience of people who would come here with the express purpose of visiting Wright's only homes built in an Olmsted suburb (except for the Paul Hanna "Honeycomb House" at Stanford.)

The Olmsted Society has tours ~ here is the information off of their website:

Walking Tours of Riverside - Tentative 2007

The last Sunday of each month (May-October) 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tours depart from the Riverside Train Depot. A donation of $7 is suggested ($5 for seniors and students with ID). Attendees receive a commemorative Riverside map and brochure. Tours of North and South Riverside alternate monthly. Group tours for 10 or more can be arranged by calling 708-442-7675 or 708-442-0845.

    May 27 (North tour)

    June 24 (South tour)

    July 29 (North tour)

    August 26 (South tour)

    September 23 (North tour)

    October 28 (South tour)

(I assume that the "North" and "South" Riverside refers to the north and south sides of town, not North Riverside the village!)

Who do we contact to try and push the brochure and highlighting the walking tours? Would it be the EDC? Historic Commision? Maybe both.

I think the Village Manager and the EDC. They could make it happen. The brochure needs to link, visually in a simple map, the three Wright houses in Riverside with the architectural tourists that arrive in Oak Park by the hundreds every week. The Oak Park Visitors Center will stock the brochure as will the Wright Center at the Studio/House on Chicago Avenue. Another place for distribution is at Unity Temple on Lake Street. River Forest has a very important house, the Winslow House, and the Coonley House here in town was chosen as one of the most important homes of the first fifty years of the century by Architectural Record. It is also the house about which Wright said to me personally, "That's where I thought I had it." A simple map showing the connecting loop of First Avenue and Harlem Avenue and how to find the houses in Riverside would be easy to produce. I'll be happy to provide the info if they will make a decision to produce it.

Some other questions that are prompted by the thread subject: Do we as a village want more exposure to the outside? If so, How can Riverside get linked into the Illinois tourism site?

Th OP brochure thing as well as this item are but two of the many aspects of promoting Riverside in a bigger way, it seems to me.

A bunch of creative imaginative business oriented people who know how to market something probably should also get involved - assuming we want to expose Riverside in to the outside world in a bigger way than we do now.

Off hand, here are some ideas from this naive computer programmer:

*Make sure Riverside, IL is linked everywhere in the Internet world of search engines and the like. I see way too many times that Riverside, CA comes up ahead of or instead of Riverside, IL. We're much better than that Orange county nothing! We were there first.

*We should have a nice nice (stutter intentional) streaming video of our town complete with music as a person wends his or her self through our town that can be looked at through the internet. It should include snippets of our towns activities, too, such as the july 4th guthrie park town picnic and parade, baseball and soccer (playing and watching) in Indian gardens (hard to find a better LOOK, or context, than Indian Gardens!), and ice skating on Longcommon, etc.

    *identification of out target audience
    for example,

    --architecture aficionados
    -------college programs
............I saw a great idea recently somewhere mentioning the possibility of talking to the urban planning programs of colleges to have field work required to visit Riverside. More local colleges, UIC and UIUC, were mentioned in this conversation.

But I say make sure colleges all over the world, with any kind of art-architecture program, know about Riverside. Recall, for example, in the Olmsted Links that I stumbled on an entry from a Purdue student who was coming to Riverside to survey and report how Riverside has changed from the original plan. I also saw a U Michigan study cited in this space.
    http://www.infonavigate.com/boston/145.htm

    -------non college architectural aficionados

--city dwellers who want suburbia but still access to chicago
--city dwellers who want suburbia but still access to chicago and good schools

    --bicycle enthusiasts
*consider the bemis bike path extension

    --zoo patrons

*consult with realtors and businesses, such as the VC group

*start a conversation on B and B's in the R1 district

    *etc

    .
In short, don't make this stuff 'accidental'. We welcome and want the 'accidental tourist', but want more....

    ...or do we? +

    .
    .
+is this a simple rhetorical question, or an allusion to Dr Evil?

To get the search engines revved up and web info out there there has to be
    1. An initial search for the item.
    2. Consistent hits on the site.

If one googles "Riverside", our village website is Number 11.
If one googles "Riverside TIF", Concerned Citizens website is Number 1 and the Village is 2.

The point is, not only does the information need to exist, people need to know enough about it to look for it in the first place.
Kind of like knowing the "right" question to ask.
