The Landscape Advisory Commission is sponsoring a Riverside Springs Ahead Community Work Day on May 29 to replant the public planters on Burlington, Quincy, and Riverside Roads. This is an ambitious project for which we need your help.

Commissioner Terri Lynne-Culloden presented a beautiful landscape plan to the Village Board at its March 1 meeting, where it was approved unanimously with strong support. The plan is to use existing plants within the Village, both on public lands and from private donations, to give our CBD a long overdue make over. The plan also includes removing several of the existing planters to increase ease of access to our businesses.

This is part of an ongoing effort to 1) make our CBD more attractive, 2) support our local businesses, and 3) create a sustainable downtown landscape that reduces the maintenance demands on our Public Works Department.

On March 31 we will be collecting plants to divide for the project. Here are the plants we need:

    Stella D'Oro Daylily
    Coneflower
    Feather Reed Grass
    Blackeyed Susan
    Fountain Grass
    Penstemon
    Prairie Drop Seed
    Autumn Joy Sedum
    Solomon's Seal
    Catmint
    Liatris
    Christmas Fern
    Coreopsis

If you have any of the above in your garden, and they are mature enough to be divided, please let us know. We will gladly come dig them and take them to Public Works on March 31. Or, if you prefer, you can dig up what you would like to donate and we will come pick them up.

In addition to the above, we will be purchasing plants for this project. If you can, please help out with a donation (our budget for this project is $5000).

Here is the timeline for the project. We need volunteers for all of the following days. Times for the first four days are 8:00 a.m. to Noon. May 29 we will be working all day so any time you can contribute that day would be great:

March 31 -- Collect plants for division; clean beds and cover with compost
April 3 -- Divide and pot plants at Public Works
April 21 -- Amend soil in all beds, cover with weed barrier and mulch
April 24 -- Pot seedlings at Public Works

May 29 -- Riverside Springs Ahead Community Work Day! Bring our CBD alive!!!

To donate funds to the project, checks should be made out to the Village of Riverside with a note that it is for the Riverside Springs Ahead Community Work Day. You can give or send donations directly to the Village office or contact me and I will help you to direct your donation to the proper place.

To donate plants, or to volunteer for any of the above work days, please contact me at bsells@riverside.il.us or (708) 442-2670.

Please let me know if I can provide any further information. And, please SPREAD THE WORD -- you can see from the above that we are going to need lots of hands to make this project a success for our Village.

This is a BIG opportunity. We all want to help revitalize our CBD. What better way to start than to make it a beautiful place where people want to come visit, shop, and enjoy? Come June 1 we can have a freshly landscaped CBD of which we are all proud and WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Thank you in advance for supporting this project, and thank you to Terri Lynne-Culloden and the LAC for their work in making this possible.

    CuriousResident,

Thank you. I share your excitment!

We are working with the Village to get the plan, and the list of needed plants, posted on the Village website. I will notify everyone here when that happens. Meanwhile, you can see more details of what Terri presented last night at:

Just a reminder that our first workday is coming up on March 31. We are still looking for donations and volunteers to help with this exciting project.

The Landmark had a nice article about it:

Low 70s, sunny, warm . . . what a day to do a little gardening!

We are meeting at the parking lot beside Riverside Bank in the morning, March 31, at 9:00 a.m. to begin work toward the big Riverside Springs Ahead Day on May 29. Tomorrow we will be cleaning the beds along Burlington, Quincy, and Riverside Road, rototilling and top coating with compost. We also will be collecting donated plants from private homes all over our Village and from our public lands.

Public Works will be assisting, and we hope to be surprised by all of the volunteers who show up ready make Riverside an even more beautiful place.

Morning refreshments courtesy of Riverside Foods and a light lunch courtesy of Chew Chew. Everyone is excited about getting started, so grab those work gloves and come on down!

If you have any questions, please give me a call at (708) 442-2670 or drop an e-mail to bsells@riverside.il.us.

Donations of 1 gallon plant containers are also appreciated. It's a good way to recycle what's collecting dust in the garage! You can drop them off at the bank parking lot Wednesday, or any time after at Public Works on 39th street.

Wow, what a day yesterday was! It could not have been more perfect weather-wise, and our volunteers did a fantastic job. Just take a spin down Burlington or around by the Police Station and see what a difference it has already made. And this was just the first step!

Hard work, I must say, especially for winter muscles. We dug, pulled, raked, cleaned, swept, rototilled, leveled, and composted in preparation for the next phase. Seeing how much better things already look makes me even more excited for our big planting day in May. Numerous well wishers stopped our volunteers to thank them for their efforts and to learn more about the project.

We have a real need for volunteers this Saturday, April 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Public Works Building to divide the multitude of plants we collected today from public lands and numerous private donors -- we will likely end up with well over 500 "free" plants, a tribute to our neighbors, and a big savings for our Village. But we have to divide them to get there, which means we need many hands this Saturday. Please note that "No Experience is Necessary!" You need not be a gardener to do this, we just need YOU!

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, and to our local businesses that fueled us with refreshments and goodwill -- Grumpy's, Riverside Foods, and Chew Chew. (And thank you Judy Finn for the brownies -- I gave everyone fair warning that they better get to them first! I have it on good authority that this Saturday it's cookies from the Finn kitchen.)

If you can help this Saturday, please, please, please e-mail me so we can make arrangements for lunch. A private donor is having lunched catered for us from our new restaurant in town, Mi Casita, but we do need an accurate head count -- bsells@riverside.il.us.

Hope to see you this Saturday!

    Ben
