From a Riverside News Flash today:

Riverside's Annual Tree Planting Program 2007

The Cooperative Tree Planting Program, sponsored by the Village of Riverside, is designed to accept donations from residents for fall tree planting. Your donation will help to reforest public parkways, keeping Riverside green for future generations to enjoy. The Village is offering a 50/50 price matching program that will cover half the cost of all trees planted on the parkway and public setback. The cost share will not be offered for public park areas but full price donations can be arranged with the Village Forester. Remember, donations for the program are tax deductible!

If you are a Frederick Law Olmsted Society member, you may be eligible for a rebate on your portion of the purchase. Please contact the President of the Olmsted Society for details and information.

Tree prices differ based on the tree species selected, sizes available, and nursery or grower providing the plant material. All prices include free tree planting, mulch, and a guarantee, which will expire June 1st, 2008. Tree descriptions and order forms are available at the Village Hall and on our website for the Public Works Department under Forestry.

Riverside's tree planting program requires substantial coordination between JULIE, the nursery contractors, and Village staff. Orders will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis, starting on August 13th, 2007, and must be received by September 17th, 2007. Mail or bring a completed order form to the Riverside Village Hall, 27 Riverside Rd., Riverside, IL 60546. Payments will be refunded if the order can not be filled.

We hope you will participate in this years' program. Should you have any questions or need additional information, please visit the Village Hall Office at (708) 447-2700 or call Village Forester, Mike Collins at (708) 442-3590 Extension 502.

Do you know where an electronic list can be found?

The only link on the village website's Cooperative Tree Program page is the "Guide to the Right Plant for the Right Place"

I'm always perplexed about why the Village can't have the same sharing scheme apply for tree donations in all the parks. I am going to propose a co-op planting program between private donors, the RBHS Ecology Club, the Olmsted Society and the Village at toniight's LAC meeting. This trial run project would be aimed at an area of the Swan Pond near the Little Dam where there have been significant tree losses over the last couple years, and where there are a couple dead trees right now. We have about $1200 I raised from my classmates at our 50th reunion last year, I will dontae another $300, hopefully the Olmsted Society will match that $1500. and perhaps we can raise a little more and make a significant contribution to "reforesting" our most precious asset. Donations should be made to the RBHS Tree Bank Project and are welcome in any amount.
