Given the recent news about future deficits at RB, I found this rumor interesting.

Last night, I was informed that RB has 4 Segways. Mounted in an upright position and with helmets secured, staff members patrol the halls. Allegedly, the cost was $15,000. I have no idea if the information is accurate; but if it is true, it sure seems excessive to me. If this turns out to be another rumor that is being spread to give the RB a hard time, I apologize for repeating it.

Has anyone else heard about this?

I googled it and found a satirical article in the RB newspaper. I suspect someone took it seriously and passed it on, and the story grew in telling.

I do not know about the exact # of Segways but this past Monday while at RB I saw Mr Passarella(Asst school Principal and defacto school disciplinarian) on a segway in the halls. I was told they are for quick use to get to trouble spots (ie: fights... etc). After seeing the renovations at RB ...Really long straight hallways, I can see where there might be an advantageous use for a Segway.

Disgusting. A frivolous expense. Another example of wasting my money.

If there was a fight, and I had to make it down the hall through a bunch of students, I'd want to be on my feet. It seems to me that the Segways would increase the risk to both its rider and the pedestrians. I don't think that there is any part of RB that is either so remote or so thinly staffed, that it neccesitates the need for Segways.

In my opinion, it is an unecessary waste of money that puts both the staff and the students at greater risk of injury.

Electrically powered scooters are available for under $200 (for a nice one).

On the same day The Landmark publishes "RB warns of future deficits":

Maybe they were donated or they received a grant?

I was at the RB open house last night. In a conversation I had with Dr Bonnette, he stated that the segways are there on a trial basis. No purchase has occurred. I saw one in action today as I dropped off my kids today. Mr Passarella was all over the place and boy does that thing move!
