Signs seen in town today

Did someone really crawl into that drain pipe and they needed to put up a "do not enter" sign there to block the entrance? The top sign has been there as long as I can remember.

I'm seeing a lot of these white and blue signs around town, near the river, all of the sudden. The tunnel has been here for a while. I wonder why the signs all of the sudden.

I noticed these two (new?) "no fishing/picnicking" signs along the river today.

This song was playing in my head while walking the path today.

And I was thinking about Spatny's offer to paint the backs of the aluminum signs green, so they weren't so jarring. I don't think any amount of paint can fix all the signs we have in town these days. It's really getting ridiculous.

    1) Wow. Liability I guess.

    2) I thought that was connected to some new money. I hope they aren't permanent.

    3) Glad to see them, as I do not think a lot of out-of-towners had fair warning fishing is prohibited on the Riverside side, and then they find themselves embarrassed by a visit from the police. (In the water and on the county side is OK.) I noticed them Sunday. I was able to stand and chat with an elderly gentleman of town down at the clearing behind the library, something I have not seen nor been able to do for years on a weekend morning. More parking available at the top of the park also.

Too bad the signs couldn't be brown or green.

PS Good idea of Spatny's. Get ready for more signs: Preserve America!

I was hoping the same thing about #2, the blue and white, but I don't think so. I thought it was from that award we were just given, which I thought was ironic (give a Preserve America award, then announce it with signs in front of all the scenic places), but I don't think so. If you read the sign, it seems to be part of the MWRD and the tunnel. These shafts with the grates have been around for a while; the signs are new. Maybe they're just announcing what's there and telling you not to mess with it. I don't think it's part of any stimulus or anything like that.

I do believe Catherine is correct. Its the Metro Water District covering its behind against a potential lawsuit should anyone get injured on or in the deep tunnel project.

I find it funny because that drain pipe has been there forever, with the sign up above it. Just recently they added the DO NOT ENTER sign covering the opening to the pipe. It's on hinges, so you can still get in there if you so desire. But I suppose now they have proof you had to see the sign that said "don't go in here."

    Silly.

I think we probably need more signs then, to cover any and all organizations against litigation. Sort of like the woman suing Brookfield Zoo after allegedly slipping on the wet floor.

Part of her claim is that there are no signs indicating that the floor may be wet and slippery.

Chris what you proposed is why there needs to be Tort reform in this country. Something neither Democrats or Republicans will "seriously" attempt to change.

Well, that suit is pretty silly. There are other slip and falls that are not.

I think there was talk of panels vetting complaints before they clogged the court system. I think requiring the paying of the defendant's cost for a suit that proves frivolous is a good idea, because a lot of folks just shake companies down for the cost of trial.

But plaintiff's lawyers are the individual's last defense against the greater resources of corporations and large organizations. No individual can compete with their ability to pay lawyers, and serious wrongs actually are committed from time to time by such entities.

I recall an interesting recent study by U of Michigan that showed that doctors who apologized for their mistakes were by far less likely to get sued for them. I once asked a friend who is a doctor whether malpractice complaints really deterred negligence. He said, you bet your *** they do!

    OK, boring, I know.

When leaving the library I noticed two men fishing right behind the new "No Fishing" sign on library hill. They had to see it on their way to where they were. Their cars did not have Village stickers. So this looks like another case of signage come to nought.

Either people cannot read english, or it is such a dumb rule, that it cannot possibly be interpreted to mean "no fishing."

The "no picnicing" sign on what was originally planned by Olmsted to be "picnic island" is another laugh!

Thanks for the tip. If there are no children present with them, I tell people there is no fishing.

Obviously, I don't think it's a dumb rule. Recently this summer folks actually had a tent pitched in that spot, blocking the entire path. I find it creepy.
