Yay!
Good news - I'll postpone my birthday dinner and celebrate #71 at Scotty's when he opens.
While this has nothing to do with orangutans or tacos; nor does it have anything to do with business in Riverside, I thought I would share the great news that a favorite Italian store is coming back under the new name of Tonini's Italian Market. It it owned and operated by Dave Goldman, the former store manager of D'Andreas & Sons.
The Grand Opening is this Thursday, November 20, located at 6950 Windsor Ave.
And hopefully the new "Rock Stars" restaurant in R'Side will open soon! (While I am happy that a new hot-dog stand is opened, I personally am not a fan of encased meats...)
Thanks for the tip, Cheryl. I've been going to Caputo's up on 15th Ave. at North Ave. - great for cheeses and all kinds of supplies. Check it out.
I was a big fan of D'Andreas. nice to see them back - and much closer to Riverside than at the Cermak Plaza. It looks like they moved due south to Home and Windsor. I wonder if Mr Goldman looked at the vacant Riverside space only a few blocks west on Harlem and Burlington? It wd have been right off all that traffic on Harlem. At least the Delaplaine Crossing marketers can now say, 'nearby to a great Italian Grocey store'.
Encased meats. Good one.
I believe that property on Burlington and Harlem is for sale, not rent, no? Apparently is has had a too-high asking price for some great time, and its owner can afford to keep it just like that.
I am glad to see the old Cafe Express on Burlington is also for lease now, and not just for sale. The two units next to new Chew Chew should enjoy plenty of foot traffic.
Hey, I know Dave Goldman! I have to check out his new place.
Tonini's is located in the Berwyn Depot District, which is a TIF district. My understanding is that they received $100 K in TIF monies (I don't know if these were loans or grants or how the $ was distributed.) So, if this is the case, I think it's clear why they wouldn't be looking at anything on the Riverside side of Harlem.
Who knew the schools in Berwyn were so great they could afford to have Tonini's get 100K!
Nonetheless, an Italian market is always welcome.
And, I noticed that Familia Foods is having their Gran Apertura in the space that previously housed D'Andreas. A carniceria y fruteria.
I will check them out, but I am pretty loyal to Berwyn Fruit Market and Riverside Foods.
