Alert: Tonninos will open for regular business Saturday, and it is on Windsor, not Stanley - in other words south side of the tracks - just east of Home, which is four blocks east of Harlem. No big sign yet, but can't miss it. Talked with them and they will be making sausage and lots of the things they had at D'Andreas.

Thanks Mr. Spatny. I was not able to go to the opening. That darn work thing gets in the way of all my fun!
But I will pop in there today and buy up the store.

I recently had a great experience in getting my eyes examined and new eyeglasses. Dr. Joseph Zaker at Visionworks in the North Riverside Mall - up on the second floor right next to Sears - did he exam and he hit it right on the money the first time. I got the exam, two pairs of eyeglasses (progressive lenses) both pairs gradient tinted all for $232., which these days is a real bargain. Best of all, I can now see you guys coming... If you need glasses, check them out.

Gas prices sure have dropped; one apparent benefit of the economic slow down. I saw $1.659 in Countryside Friday.

Riverside in the snow, especially the way the snow traces out the contours of tree trunks and branches. It is hard to say which season is most beautiful here. If the sun comes out, the splendor will be complete.

Cheryl - they have good bread delivered from Amatos in the city. We had the sausage and I made liguini with red clam sauce with some of arrbiata sauce - very good. Lots of other nice things...
Chris - don't get too happy - Opec just OK'd a cut of 2 mil barrels and Russia may chip in another .6 mil barrels, about 3% of the total - so they will be going back up.
Yesterday around 5 PM I was down at the Little Dam with that Black Dog that follows me around, and the sky was glowing, the trees black against it, and the black water of the river was rushing - almost flat with the dam - silver swirls and big icicles - all very wonderful. Revee runs like a loon in the snow, then lies it and makes snow angels - it's her element. She'd stay for hours...
When the ground is hard frozen I hope the DPW will get a bucket loader and truck in there and pick up the wood and debris piles, and perhaps regrade the portion of the path that eroded - it's really easy to twist an ankle there now. Yesterday one of my classmates was down from Eagle River where they really have snow and cold, so we repaired to the Hungarian Epicurean restaurant (on Roosevelt just west of Mannheim ) to wait out the storm with some good food and drink and wax nostalgic. "Remember that cheerleader with...What was her name?" Time flies when you're having fun... Come back soon, Noel.

SAUSAGE at RIVERSIDE FOODS @ $.79 cents !! - and it's HOT, right near the deli in that hot food bar. You can eat it straight if you want, since it is already cooked, warm, and nicely seasoned.
Today they have chicken sausage. I 've had the italian sausage.
This has got to be the one of the best Recession Specials around. They need to advertise this better.
'Brother can you spare some sausage? - You got it right here!'
'Beat the Recession, and eat our home made sausage!'For $2.99 a lb, the greek salad is a perfect complement also.

Boy, look at our town in the snow! It's enough to make you love winter. Looking at it, anyway!

Catherine, I was thinking the same thing today. I don't mind driving on snow-covered roads. I say, save the salt, just clear the excess snow and leave the packed snow, like it used to be "in the old days" (well, when I was a kid anyway.)
Also, three Coca Cola trucks outside the new Chew Chew location. Could we be getting close to a grand opening??

I was down at the Little Dam with the Mad Russian - my dog Revee - and the black water rushing and white snow is really intoxicating... well I do have my flask with so maybe that helps. Kids having a great time sledding down the hill, and the traffic so quiet running on packed snow - nicer than the hiss of salt water. The pines are rally loaded and look just ethereal. I took some corn over to the deer at 47th and Harlem - not a one in sight when I got there but after dumping several piles I looked around and there were five, then fifteen - including several big bucks. Good thing the Feed Store is so close by on Harlem - just south of I 55. If you haven't been there check it out - all kinds of foods and birdseed for our wild friends - including those "bird pizzas" that you hang up and they come and cling to. We have lots of cardinals, sparrows, finches and nuthatches at 111 - even some red headed woodpeckers that look great in the snow. I made chicken soup (double chicken with veggies and matzoh balls - and the carcasses go to the raccoons. Be good to your animal friends...oneof thegreat features of Riverside in the snow...
