At tonite's meeting I suggested the Village Board work on getting Dist 96 to pick up the cost of the crossing guards for the next three years. They have a $9mil plus surplus that will increase this year, and every year. The crossing guards are a safetyy related school issue and can rightfully be paid by taxpayer dollars collected by the schools. Parents and others concerned should show up at school board meetings and demand they do this.
I also suggested we have an official "Pick it up Day" in the Village where every family involves all its members in picking up the trash that is constantly accumulating here. Public Works does not have the personnel to do this, and the place is starting to look terrible. We need to stop throwing those wrappers, bottles, cans, cig packs and other debris out the window and instead start taking a bag withyou when you walk the dog, or go to the schools to pick up your kids, and BEND OVER AND PICK UP THE TRASH. It'sgood exercise and will give you a sense of accomplishment.
I've been doing this on my own everyday for a couple years wherever I go, in the Village and at the Forest Preserves, and this year I kept track of the plastic bags full of trash I picked up. Three to ten plastic grocery bags a day. So far, since January 1st, 1018 bags! How about all you bloggers just picking up 18 bags between now and the end of the yea?. It is not beneath you. It is a good thing you can start to do for your self and your community right away and at no cost. I'm amazed at how so many people can simply not see the trash that is all over in this town. As an experiment I purposely left a couple cans on the lawn in front of Central/Hauser where they were, not three feet from the sidewalk where daily more than a hundred parents come to collect their kids several times a day, and no one ever picked them up. How can that be? It is not someone else's job to keep this place clean, it is the obligation of all of us that live here. Give it a try, and Village Board, how about establishing a Village wide "Clean up the Village Day"? We're always talking about things that would involve families and bring our residents together- here's a good one. Any takers?
